Not been on the forum for a while , till the past few days ,and ill be honest , whats happened !! the amount of bad language used in my eye i unacceptable ,it also appears that new members are getting slated , thought this was a forum for every one experianced or not we all have to start some where and with the advice thats available on here being un limited , i think every one should look at what they are doing as the forum appears to be heading in a downward direction , there is nothing wrong with a debate think thats great ,and i know times are hard but if it carrys on the way it is the forum will die on its feet and im the last one that wants that , i have some great respect for the forum members as an electrician and well as friendship when i started on here i was welcomed with open arms to me it was like a big family so big family hug and lets get back to what the forum should be:yesnod:

Quiet agree, may be we should be reporting new members for their inappropriate input as much as some of the established members too.

That said there seems to be wave after wave of people who prefer to google for information rather than buy the appropriate books and read them for themselves.

As for DIY'ers don't get me started, this is the Electricians forum, not the DIY electrics forum, IMHO

Agree, it’s not a DIY electrics forum and I totally support the lads on here who get really annoyed with DIYers coming on trying to get people to tell them how to change a CU or the RCD keeps tripping after a DIY CU change.

I'm with Nick here, yes it is an electricians forum, but how many times in your career have you been on site or just even out and someone as asked you. ........................your a sparks and I got this what do you think?...................

I think it is more the hostility by some shown to others that is starting to wear thin on here. Already there seems to be an exodus as one superb poster with fantastic knowledge rarely comes on here now, due mainly to where the forum is heading.

I always feel that if questions exasperates you, don't post, it's not compulsory to post an answer, but some members feel that they need to vent at posters for whatever reason. As Nick said this will kill the forum and all you will have are a few sparks knocking about with nothing to say.

My granny always told me if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing, I think some here would do well to use this adage

I wouldn't normally get involved in a thread like this but i must agree with the point Malcolm makes. I have noticed a rise in the level of hostility on the forum in recent months. Some threads that start out as interesting conversational topics are reduced to condescension and unnecessary bickering. Debate is great but sometimes it would be nicer to see a bit more tolerance (and i don't necessarily mean with DIY Daves & Joe Bloggs)

In my experience a lot of first time posters have visited and read this forum several times before taking the leap and contributing their first post - The danger is that if the tone of the forum becomes that of hostility and provocation that the potential new posters will shy away from posting which invariably is bad news for this forum.

In saying that, I know this is a fantastic forum and we are proud and happy to be sponsors, but as my granny used to say; 'it's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice' :yesnod:

Its so much easier to make a joke out of something and then guide someone in the correct direction in a gentle and nonthreatening way, then it is to castrate them and subsequently get yourself into a flap about it and put a downer on your cup of tea and nob nob. Unfortunately i believe in general, the human condition dictates sadly that we thrive of confrontation, not only is a scrap more interesting and probably more amusing for some people, but it the sense of self righteousness it fills people with after dumping on someone for asking what MCB stands for, is what makes feebly minded people with a little, maybe even a lot knowledge do it.

Agreed with all the points above, if nothing to contribute in a useful way (like me 95% of the time), then ignore it and move on to a post about beer and -----? Or find a numerous thread on jokes and pretend like your the big funny man around the office after poaching jokes for 35 minutes and emailing them throughout the building.......

Thats odd - you said she she wanted a holiday somewhere different, i wasnt aware wives were allowed OUT the kitchen? i would have granted temporary permission into the garden for 2 weeks to sort the weeds out and build the new jacuzzi i just ordered.

well, i got her to sort the weeds. she just looked at them and they withered and died.

There is some money to made there pal, i'd be renting her out to keen gardeners around the country and making a pretty penny. Stand her upright on a rotating table, perched amongst a weedy garden and your laughing

yeah, but you remember the story about the gorgons. don't think my insurance covers men being turned to stone.

Im realy dissapointed in you tel you could have at least taken her to Rhyl !!! Joking appart i hope this post does make people think , thats why i posted it , i felt sad the way it appeared to be going nothing wrong with the banter i see the funny side before the serious but lets get it back to the great forum it should be i will be watching , i know some of the newbie posters can be agressive but as regular posters its our place to keep them on the forum standards any any post the is insulting or offensive and even agressive should be reported to the moderators , you should be proude of the forum as its you guys that keep it going

I do wonder if some of the training companies "point" their "trainees" in the direction of this forum to avoid having to do some of the work (and overheads) themselves. The newbies do seem to come "wave" after "wave", almost as if its publicised at a certain point of a training process.

Personally I'd like to see a "sub" forum, under the "arms" where those who have gained "arms" status can raise questions in catagories as per the general forum, but we won't get the input from all and sundry.

Do you mean like a 'two tier' forum where those of us who have been on for a while or run their own domestic installing companies never have to talk to 'normies' and 'johnny-come-latelys'?

Iv been here a fair while and post now and then but as has been said there is no need for nasty posts ect just dont post My normal advice has upset some when I ask if the person asking is competant ( ususl reply along the lines of I have CnG XXXXX Nvq XX ect ect ect) having a bit of papaer may make you qualified but it sure as hell doesnt make you competant
There is an age old saying "Every days a school day" and I know that as well as the next man There is also more than one way to skin a cat is another fav saying
the rise in course providers who want to churn out "electricians" realy does my nut in and I know I have upset a couple of self employed D.I. 5WWs by questioning how they can justly take monies from people doing a job that they arent competant at and are infact gaining experience from working in said peoples houses

i have to agree with mogga
my input . i came on here for chat and learn some things but the forum is full of people asking the same stupid questions and i'm amazed that you deign to reply as every one is just out of their time , its there 1st post etc if they work for a company ask the sparks there or google for the answer lets work for it a little

some of the people saying they are sparks aren't i'm sure so why not ask them questions . i dont think that people are being hurtful or nasty just fed up with Electrical Trainee's and diyers asking questions and using our knowledge if it was a person that i thought was a spark of course i'd help but please i get enough "how do i"
during the day or can you have a quick look at for me as i met you an hour ago and now your my best mate so you'll do it for free

am i a miserable sod or just fed up with every one trying to get something for nothing

My Pikey girlfriend lived in Rhyl.

I went to visit her & after battling through rain, hail, sleet & snowdrifts on the M62 over Saddleworth Moor I eventually arrived to find the place closed !!!! :32:

I feel the way people should look at posting on forums is how would they answer/speak to someone face to face. I know DIY people and Electrical Trainee get peoples backs up and I can see why (i've been in electrics / electronics for at least 30 years but don't have any bits of paper to say I can do this that n the other), I feel a few of these are learning from paying customers which to me is wrong. BUT there's no need to get into a slanging match. Bite your tongue (or fingers as it's a forum), deep breaths n go to another thread !!!!

If I thought a forum was made of experienced electricians and people like me who really want to do the job properly and I thought I could get sound advice I would pay a subscription, having to cough up a few readies can help keep the cheapskates away.

There really are some superb posters and information here, really helpful and I would hate to see the site descend into a slanging match with helpful teachers giving up and walking away.

I'll get my Tin Hat.

I know that DIYer and Electrical Trainee winds us up does me we all come across them that think they are better than some one that has been in the trade for years , its our industry and its the industry thats letting us down by alowing fast tract training even after 30 years in the trade im still learning and reading some of the other threads its seams that BG are one of the biggest culprits ,and having seen them myself issuing DN's where not nessesary ,but that was not the point of the post the point is offensive language and how we speak to others not shooting them down in flames

To be honest I am starting to think that this forum is somewhere to come and ask stupid questions to provoke a reaction. The vast number asking those questions would have been dead in the water before the internet and forums came on the scene, the Electrical Trainee courses would have no value with no readily available information resource like this and other forums provide. The difficulty is separating the genuine and the chancers and that is what brings out the anger. On a number of occasions over the last few months I have decided not to contribute to threads mainly due to the content of the original post or subsequent posts by the originator as some seem to border on trolling and looking to destroy the forum by getting established members banned

Its a very simple solution really - if the original post appears somewhat diluted regarding its content and the poster clearly has little idea what they are doing/talking about. Ignore them. They will soon give up and go on the screwfix forum and be given some really diamond advice by an ex B&Q carpet fitter.

If there is nothing useful to contribute, then just move along and ignore the post. It really is as simple as that, there is NO requirement that long time served members are compelled to add something to a conversation. Im a newby here and not for one second having a preach don't misunderstand me, im just voicing what appears to be a common sense approach to avoid confrontation to people being idiots. We would do the same in the street, in the pub or at a bus stop - avoid fools = avoiding bad tempers.
