MK has urgently recalled 37 versions of its Essentials double socket range over a high risk of fire

Local Authority Trading Standards have issued a product recall of MK Electric, MK Essentials switched socket-outlet.
Date: 9th December 2024
Risk Type: Fire
Sales Period: 2018 to 3rd July 2024
Risk Description: The product presents a high risk of fire as it has been identified that when the switch on the socket is being switched on, switched off, or whilst it is under load, there is a possibility for an arc flash to occur. This could cause the socket and surrounding materials to ignite, causing a fire.
The affected sockets do not meet the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 or the Plugs and Sockets (Safety) Regulations 1994.

From 2018!

So all these council jobs that have specced MK sockets for the past 6 years are going to have to be changed?
MK going to pay for sparks time?

Something to be sad for Screwfix LAP and BG

What about the “next big thing” when MK introduced the lever connections on sockets.

Quelle surprise:rolleyes:

when was the last time you voluntarily fitted MK?

Probably ~15 years for me, and that was only because I like to fit consumer units that are pretty common rather than brand faith, and stopped when I found hagar could produce a unit that didn't all sqonk out of line when you torqued the MCB's up. I remember fitting their light switches (specified by a client because they're the best right? No? well you're just an electrician what would you know, I say they're the best!) in 2001 and the room with 14 GU10's made a big bright flash when you operated it, tried several, then managed to find a (definitely not second-hand sir) older version from before they had the tiny little mechanism.

I remember cleaning up mk sockets as an apprentice as it was the only brand the council would accept in schools, to match existing im talking old mk .you were warned if any mk fittings came off a job you kept them and they got the jiffy treatment. But you do what your told when your 16

They'd probably still outlast what they're producing today!

I am a fan of the old MK stuff. My home was built 50 years ago and almost everything is original MK from that time. The double sockets are the ones where the faceplate is secured with 4 screws. The pull-cord light switch in the main bathroom is also original and works perfectly. Not sure much of today's stuff will last 50 years...and anyway, folks like to jazz-up their switches and sockets much more frequently these days.
Of course, not being "smart" switches, I have get off my bottom to put the lights on...

The decline started with those switchsockets with the red paint on the rocker. After a year or two of being in use, once you pushed a plug into one, it was reluctant to give it back. Replaced loads for elderly customers who couldn't grip as well as they once could.
