Hi all,

My mother wants a double socket adding next to a desk, behind the desk there is a 10mm (i dont know the MCB in the Consumer Unit) which feeds a workshop outside which in turn has its own CU.

What i was thinking of doing was spurring off the 10mm into a Fused connection unit with a 13A fuse to supply the socket (using 2.5mm from the FCU to sockets so i can terminate them in the back of the socket!)

What i want to check to see is if the FCU is necessary, or if actually 10mm cable can easily enough be terminated in to the back of sockets (as long as the back box is big enough!). And whether i am able to spur off a feed to another CU, i know i can't to certain fixed appliances, but im not sure about CUs

Thanks
Ned

What size fuse rating is the 10mm ?
Is it Swa ? or T&E.
Is it Rcd Protected ?

How long would the 2.5 mm be to the socket.

not easy wrestling a 10mm into a socket, or into an FCU.

Can you run a new 2.5mm cable the same route as the 10 back to the board, and supply it as itsd own radial

Not sure what the fuse rating is for the 10mm, i think it is a 40A MCB - i think it is RCB protected, but a very old property, so i am not 100%
It is T&E for sure
2.5mm would literally be 10/15cm from the FCU to the socket (they would be next to each other)

That is a good point, i didnt think about the FCU being the same as the socket!
I looked at giving it its own radial but the run is impossible without ripping out a welsh dresser that she had built in a few years back!

Don’t try connect 10mm to a socket. Wouldn’t be ideal breaking into it either. Ideally a cable back to board, worst case scenario spur off another socket with appropriate rcd and over current protection.
