Bought me a lake house and found this.

Let me explain what we're seeing here.

This is an enclosure mounted on a post near the driveway. The source wire coming up from the black pipe is fed from a 30amp double pole breaker in the house panel. Not sure if the white wire coming from the house is neutral or ground. The wire does appear to be 10/2 at least. The run is probably about 70 feet long.

I've not figured out yet where the wires in from the pipe on the right go yet. I believe they went to the nearby shed, but can't locate them in there.

Problem 1: The red wire, I guess, wasn't long enough, so they extended it with a piece of 14awg!
Problem 2: The 14/2 romex (the loose side was attached to the left side of the breaker) was coming out of the bottom of the box, over a fence, thru the door of the shed and tied into the lugs of an old Federal breaker box. It had 8 single pole breakers in it. 2 of those breakers (not adjacent, but at least on different busses) was feeding a 10/3 wire to a 220v dryer plug. Not sure how many amps the dryer was pulling, but suprised the 14awg extentions below survived.
Problem 3. The white wire from the house (if it's neutral) is bonded to ground here and shouldn't be.
Problem 4. The green/red wires and a hot from the right side of the breaker goes down to another 30 amp breaker, which feeds a 30amp RV receptacle. The green and red are the ground and neutrual and they shouldn't be bonded either.

I'm sure were many other problems. I was testing the dryer in order to sell it and noticed one of the breakers in the federal box was off. Flipped it on an the dryer started making a very loud electrical buzz then shut off. The 30am breaker inside the house tripped. No wonder that breaker was OFF!


Needless to say, immediately shut off this breaker below and the 30amp breaker in the house that feeds it.

It's amazing how there can be so many things wrong with so few wires, some of which aren't even used.

I've never seen 2 conduits sharing the same knockout before, or conduits going so far into an enclosure like that. Quite perverse really.

That looks very dangerous and if it was me I would tear it all out and do it right using the right color wire
