anyone know of a white surface mount 2 gang box

Use a pvc box which doesn‘t shatter like the plastic ones and drill a 20mm hole in side as required.

Plaster board faced insulation - making good?

Screw a piece of battening across the hole you have made with plasterboard screws either side and countersunk. Then cut a piece of plasterboard the correct size to fill the hole you have made and screw that to the battern. Finally skim over joint with plaster or filler as appropriate.

UK EICR Done, New CU Required. Am I being taken for a ride?

Regs are not retrospective, as others have said if it was ok at installation it should be ok now. Now if you want to upgrade to the latest spec for increased safety that’s a different job. But bear in mind that a good CU can be obtained for under £100 so the rest is all labour which sound expensive.

UK Running a cable for home Welder

Don’t forget you will need an Earth stake outside the garage connected to your new CU.

    Insulation tape on connector blocks

You are right! I think it’s belt & braces just an extra layer of protection in case some odd wire may touch one of the screw terminals or to hold the cable in place with the missing cable grip.

3 phase supply to single phases only 2 phases used

One problem I got an emergency call out on a strong windy night where lights were going up and down and dist board smoking. On investigation I found we had lost the neutral supply and 480v was being applied to the household single phase circuits. Had to pull the main cut out fuses and inform the...

Henley Block between meter and main switch

Do a risk assessment first before working on live equipment. Is there a safer way of disconnecting, Yes ! Remove the main fuse on no load. As far as I know nobody has been fined for removing the fuse as long as you are not trying to steal electricity.

    Insulation tape on connector blocks

choc blocks are screw connections and such should be accessible for maintenance & testing in the future. Do not bury in the wall where nobody will know they are there. All cable runs must run horizontal or vertical from accessories to accessory.

Why does the UK use rings for sockets?

Depends on the number of sockets required. One or two sockets radial are ok but larger cable required. You can have any number of 13 amp sockets on a ring circuit as the floor area is the limiting factor. Use 2.5 t&e in a ring and wired back to a 32 amp breaker will prevent overloading circuit...

What electrics are required for water underfloor heating?

Hi , I installed a complete underfloor heating system myself and it’s not too bad. What will be required is the controls for each circuit. Assuming each room will require its own circuit or two there will be a manifold somewhere where all the individual underfloor pipes come together. Install a...

    two shaver sockets

Hi, if both of these shaver sockets are proper ones with built in isolation transformers then I don’t see a problem as there will be no potential difference between them and hence no safety problems.

3 phase supply to single phases only 2 phases used

Hi I have a customer on an old farm supply. Many other electricians have assumed it was just 2 of 3 phases supply but it’s not. I learned about farm supplies from my tutor at technology college 50+ years ago who worked for the local supply company. They used the 2 phases for farm machinery...
