the Good News: Well its all fixed. AFAICT from the information provided, had the original (presumed) electrician followed the rules, my life would have been somewhat easier. Add that to the fact that there was no slack in the wires through the ceiling at all meant either a trip to the roof void...
Hey give me a break. I did hte degree over 40 years ago!!.
Anyway. attempt 1 was a disaster (blew a fuse!). Switch is grey and red and somewhere in the celinign it becomes black and red!!. Still traced that. Wired up as (I understood I was) advised (3 reds in the middle); Grey (black) switch to...
Thanks guys.
I am not an electrician but do have a degree in electrical engineering so understand the basics (pull the fuse before you start!). Also have circuit tester and voltmeter so, armed with this excellent advice, I'm off after lunch to try to sort it.
If all fails you will probably see...
OK so I screwed up!
Went to replace my daughters ceiling fitment (old one yellow and paint spattered) expecting to detach the lamp, remove the old cable, attach the new cable and screw the rose into the existing ceiling fitment.
Good plan which failed miserably when the new rose failed to screw...
Right. Got it. Thanks
So I googled. The first (Smappee) was £300. Then I stuck UK in the search string and got a pile of smart meters. What would you suggest?
Gavin: Sounds an excellent plan. May take a day or so but I will report back.
So a quick look says currently (2 PCs, TV and 5 or 6 lights) I get 3 flashes in 15 seconds so that is 1 watt hour every 5 seconds. I seem to have too many time units here so how do I turn this into Kw used?

1. Fascinating. Wonder why you got so much and I get little. I only do washing during the day (and usually sunny days so it can hang in the garden.) Dont do washing even in the evenings even in the winter.
Only 1 of me so I dont use the dishwasher that much.
I...
Yes - White cable clipped to wall. Neat if somewhat obtrusive job
I live alone.
Heavy lifting is done by Gas (heating, hot water, cooking etc)
Lighting mostly LED
But it still seems to me the reduction in usage is very small - quite probably explained by the shift to LED and random...
Of course.
The installation is on the garage wall so trunking might have looked sligtly out of place!!!
The electricity meter is about 5 yards away from the inverters outside the garage on the wall of the house
You mean like this?
There are two sets of panels (12 and 4) so the installed two separate inverters.
The meter above the LH yellow switch is the one I provide readings from on generation
The white cable (bottom Left) goes to the normal electricity meter
Actually no immersion heater. Only three wires in the cupboard - two water pumps and an aquastat immersion thermostat
So no possibility of electricity affecting hot water or gas bill.
How easy is it to fit an immersion heater? There seems to be a hole for it with a large nut in place?
BUT: I...
I installed a 4Kw system in November 2015
From commissioning to November 2016 I generated approx 3500Kwh
My electricity bill for
Dec 2014 – Nov 2015 was 1477 Kwh
Dec 2015 – Nov 2016 was 1309 Kwh
and my pattern of usage has not changed significantly in this period - apart from a change from...
