Another Vote for EasyCert, it keeps getting better features all the time. I'll dig out a couple of videos if anyone wants them let me know (I've done some vids for others to see so that they can see how to use it).
PAT Testing
First of all, we have all heard that 'I will give you loads more work' (or I own lots of houses!) nonsense before and surely nobody is still silly enough to fall for that!? Lol These people are looking for cheapest price, and we are businesses, not charities! Tell them to do it...
I have both desktop and iPad version, but have done all my inspections so far purely on the iPad, and sent the electronic version of the certificate to customers. This is a huge time saver, unless a customer requests a printed certificate (particularly the NICEIC version), as then it has to be...
Easy PAT on the other hand, appears to be pretty useless on the iPad, at least in the way I use it (i.e. do tests on megger PAT 4D/V and then upload results to Easy PAT) - this appears to be easier on a laptop as far as I can work out so far.
Easy Cert on the iPad is fantastic, it is SO much quicker, and just send certificates by email when done. Until recently the certificates were not fully completing, but I believe the recent release fixed this (as well as giving the new format Inspection forms for Amendment 1).

Are the apps quicker to use (i.e. add data as well...
As already stated, the method using LN - E together as a limited test is also useful and a valid test (but comment as a limitation that this is what you are doing on the report), and is being used more and more in these situations.
Also agree that there may still be something 'unconventional'...
Not sure if this is what you are asking, but see the Electrical Safety Council's Best Practise Guide on Periodic Inspection Reporting at Best Practice Guide - Approved contractor scheme - NICEIC Group
