Hi,

Im not looking for off the track comments etc, but to cut a long story short, I don't know how much to put an invoice for, for a rewire ai did last year, this is the labour side of things, ill break it down.

Basically its my grannys house, I did it out of the goodness of my heart other than parts, but now her life is drawing to an end she wants me to put an invoice into her estate for the full going rate.

Ok, so house is in Northampton, done my a qualified spark etc..

4 bed detached, with conservatory, three phase head, two dis boards, ones a 20 way MK and the other is an Invicta 3.

There's also 4 flood lights outside in trunking and three carriage lamps at the front, full garage install, sockets and lights etc.

11 storage heaters, also an enclosure for contactor and control circuit etc, separate hob and cooker circuits, connect and fitted new over and hob, and plinth heater and extractor etc.

Circuits on the 24 hour board, are as follows:

  1. Shower
  2. Hob
  3. Kitchen & Utility Sockets
  4. Upstairs Sockets
  5. Conservatory
  6. Downstairs Lights + Smokes
  7. Cooker
  8. Downstairs Sockets
  9. Garage Sockets
  10. Water Heater
  11. Caravan Power Point
  12. Boiler
  13. Upstairs Lights
  14. Outside Lights
  15. Garage Lights

Circuits on the Night board, three phase are as follows

  1. Lounge Heater (F)
  2. Hall Way Heater
  3. Lounge Heater (R)
  4. Dining Room Heater (R)
  5. Dining Room Heater (F)
  6. Utility Heater
  7. Large Fr. Bed. Heater
  8. Large Re. Bed. Heater
  9. Small Re. Bed. Heater
  10. Small Fr. Bed. Heater
  11. Water Heater
  12. SPARE

I did not supply the storage hears, but did supply everything else.

The cost of parts alone with nothing added on was £1950.00 inc VAT

The house is 1960 ish, all floor board, all had just oiver min sockets in each room, all lights re centred, all walls chased and re skimmed in, and all fittings moved to new heights.

What would you say is a fair price if you were quoting to do the job inc parts? Basically so I know roughly what to charge, I have a figure in my head, but want to know your thoughts.

This also includes fitting

1. Three loft lights
2. New shower
3. Bathroom wall heater
4. Four interconnected smokes
5. EICR for letting out
6. Connection of 11 storage heaters

Well, as an incredibly rough rule of thumb, I always reckon that materials run to about 30% of your total job (it figures that the more materials, the greater time to fit), so if your materials were coming to £2k for arguments sake, then I would have thought you'd probably have a labour charge of around £4k. However, that might not be competitive for your area, so you'll have to judge.

At £60 a point, that's £4.5k if you price using that method.

hmmm, I feel bad even putting an invoice in, but ive been asked to for various reasons, I intended to do it free of charge, but if I can be paid then I guess im not going to say no, but would like to think im not over the top.

I think ill perhaps go with £5200.

It was a big job, not just a quick rewire.

I think Murdoch's right with the 5.5k. I understand the bit about the love job and probably why she's now saying what she is. What you could do is lie to her (I know it's not right but) if you're uncomfortable billing her then is a lie really a bad thing as long as she is happy?
"did you give me that bill?" "Yes, I gave it to my dad/mam/uncle/aunt/brother/sister/the lawyers"

Mrs Trev's aunt died a bit over a year ago, she was determined that before she died she'd make a will and in her more lucid moments she'd ask if the lawyer had been to draw it up for her. She was told it had happened and she was ok with that.

it could be that she's trying to lose some cash to avoid inheritance tax. £5500 seems right on the money, IMO.
