I have recently had a new combi boiler fitted after the old Ferroli died! I live in an ex council house so the wiring surrounding the boiler is a tad messy!!!
At the side of the boiler there's the fused socket, an alarm socket (for when the pressure gets too low, installed for the elderly tenant prior to me) and another socket box with wires for the old thermostat controller (see pics)

obviously the white fused box is the main power and the black cable coming from it is powering the new boiler. The fused box has a grey cable coming from the main fuse box and a grey cable comes from the same box to the old thermostat controller. A grey cable comes from the main fuse box and goes into the other white box (thermostat wiring box - assuming as the N + L) and another grey cable comes from this and goes to the thermostat controller (assuming its the addidtional L, A + B)

The white cable that comes out of the thermostat wiring box has the same colour wires as the thermostat connector block on the new boiler

Here is a picture of the connector blocks in the new boiler

Can anyone make head or tail of this to enable me to get this working?
I had an electrician out yesterday and he told me he wouldn't touch it and i'd need to get an electrical heating engineer!!

Am i right in saying i have all the cables?
I would like to 'tidy' the wires, take aways the alarm for low pressure and really just get the wireless controller working, i'd like to avoid blowing the house up!!! :wink5:

All help welcomed......
Thanks

Jodie

You've done a good job with the pics, but unless your experienced with electrical work, try and find a local spark who really knows heating systems. The job should be fairly quick (and therefore inexpensive) for someone who knows what they're doing and you'll be sure of having a safe installation.

Get some one in but I'd say remove the link in the choc blocks and I would run a 5 core flex from boiler to the wireless stat reciever. Any spark will be able to connect it up for you

Sorry I am way to far away but as stated in former post it should only take max 1 hour so should not be too expensive I would hate to try to describe it but have done hundreds of many different heating systems not really that difficult if your there but from the Orkney islands just a little harder hehehe good luck

Thanks for the replies.
I am fairly handy and this looks not too bad but when the electrician said he wouldn't touch it, it got me a bit worried!
Today was quoted £170 to fit the wireless thermostat and I thought the guy must have been wearing a mask as that was robbery!
Happy to pay but don't want the mickey taken either!

If you can run a 3 core cable from the switched spur and a five core to the thermostat reciever a sparky wont charge alot to connect it up, a 1.5 heat resistant flex would do the trick

bikerjodie, you have gone to the trouble of posting photo's and have given a clear description of your need

Unfortunately.even though its a fairly simple task.unless you can do basic wiring and could safely follow the instruction that may be given, a boiler would be an expensive item to practice on
It would be wise to employ an electrician for the task
Any half decent spark should be able to sort out your job with ease, the electrician you engaged originally should have been able to perform this task

I just saw the estimate cost and I would have the same attitude as yourself
Most people do reasonable jobs at reasonable prices, but there are exceptions and you found one

Provided there's no hidden safety issues with the supply and earthing arrangements, then I would have thought that half that figure would be enough to connect up the thermostat (which you're supplying) and do some essential "tidying up" which seems to be required. Then safety and functional testing.

Jesus I charge £20 an hour I could be there all day and not charge that and if I was there all day I would be so ashamed I would probably just charge a token tenner lol don't get ripped off

Thanks for all the replies, if anyone's near Glasgow happy for you to come have a look!

You say a 3 core from the fused box, where is the 5 core running from? Also the fused box? I understand the 3 core has to run to the connector block on the boiler and the 5 core to the N L L A B of the thermostat! This would also let me take out all the surplus cables too? (the other white box and the alarm box)

the last thing you want to do is take advice on this forum and blow your new combi boiler by not paying an electrician about 50 quid, some times you need to bite the bullet and pay for experiance not all of us take the wee!
by getting an electrician in he will check the existing supply to see if ok check if bonding needed correctly connect boiler and if anything did go wrong he should have adequate insurance to cover any cost. you should receive a minnor works certificate of works done.
you can see a list of qualified electricians in your area by looking at these websites elecsa, niceic, napit, corgi.

There's a thread in Electricians Unite titled SMA's and the deskilling of our industry. I'm certain some of the guys regularly posting in there are from the Glasgow neck of the woods
