HI I am Emma

I live near brighouse and I am a homemaker. I have some basic understanding of electrics e.g. wire colours and live and neutral are for current flow. I also know about simple switches that both wires are live at a light switch just one only works when switch on. I know we have earth for safety but could not explain why?
