Hi all, (for some reason this site won't let me hit return and start a sentence on a new line... Anyway...) My cousin who has just left school is on an electrical course and comes out to shadow me from time to time. I have just started up as self employed and can't afford to pay him. What options are there to take him on as an apprentice and get some funding towards his wages? Who do I notify? Who does he have to talk to? Many thanks in advance. (Also is anybody else being logged out automatically or is it just me?)

I've just done this with a young lad. He will have to go to his local college and enrol on a full course, they will tell him how to do it. Then they will want to speak to you and check you have all the correct paperwork, including employer liability insurance.

You have to take him on the cards, and then they will offer you a grant for £1500. This wont cover his course or the insurance, so I don't know why it isn't more. I have had this apprentice for 18 months and still have not received a penny.

Altogether, it is very costly and you wont be able to pay him much, but someone has to train these young lads properly and keep them away from the stupid short courses.

Good luck, you will need it!

Give him a post-it note with 1) Reach Around 2) Tartan Paint & 3) Long Stand on...then said him to wholesaler.

When he comes back mortified....Tell him 'bet you cant lift this bag of plaster over your head' ... then once its above his head, put the stanley knife down the middle of it.

If he's still not crying - megga him.

LOL He's now the apprentice!

Thanks 2na, I've told him what you told me. Is it the college that give you the grant of £1500? Have you had an explanation as to why they haven't given it to you yet? If we continue as we are, is there any negative aspects apart from him not being on a recognised apprenticeship?

You can get up to 4k from some skill centres for taking on an apprentice, thats around 50% of the actual cost of the whole course over 3-4 years, you also as mentioned above get a grant of 1,500 for employing him from the government, but thats it, so his wages and the other 2.5k you will have to fork out, over 4 years it isn't much at all though.

Hi prime design

last time I looked into it you have to pay them their normal hourly (min wage), government pay their college & books ect, but you have to pay their day at college & you must have all insurances in place & they have to be employed PAYE.
or the way I did it was to get the boy to go to college of his own back to show he was willing & then I pay him for a 39 hour week on a set wage & then he gets all his entitlements as we'll holiday ect.
