Practising Electrician (Qualified - Domestic or Commercial etc)
Hello all .
I have, this year, kick started myself into retraining as an electrician, trying to move away from offshore working and abseiling works which meant I spent far too much time away from home. I have a keen interest in electrical work and study.
Don't judge me - but yes I did attend an intensive course - it doesn't make me a bad person!
There seems to be a lot of unfriendly comments and assumptions surrounding those of us who take this route - but for myself I didn't really have much choice. I did look into full time college courses and associated apprenticeships a few years back - but as an older 'student' and with a family to support and mortgage to pay it just wasn't viable. Besides I had already taken 4 years out of paid work to study Maths at University....
So I have succeeded with quals up to and including 2395 Periodic Inspection. Passed everything first time and enjoyed the challenge. I got stuck right in.
I am well aware than I am 'an improver' and need that all important experience - an 'informal apprenticeship'. I continue to read and study - and am looking at further training/distance learning. So I'll be looking around for anyone who needs an electricians mate/electrical improver in and around the Sheffield Area, and never bite off more than I can chew!
Thankyou!

Welcome to the forum, your journey into this industry will not be instant, as long as you understand that, I have been in it 38 years and every day is a school day. Best of luck.

Welcome along mate

Yes, welcome and enjoy the studying. It gets more fascinating everyday, maybe because I'm new to it as well but I still think it's a great occupation.

Hi Marcus-

Totally understand where your coming from-

Left the army after 10 years, retrained as a spark. Worked. continental shifts (security) used holidays to attend college (day release) & still couldn't find anyone to take me on as an adult trainee.

So when is was off shift & no college I found a company who would let me work for them (free for experience) so technically cost me money to work for them

Few years later- all is good

so MORE than happy to help anyway I can (just don't tell me your a drop short)
