HI guys

may be the wrong forum, if it is apologies.

I have a new hob 7.2kw and oven 4kw , I have laid a new 10mm t&e under my floorboards before tiling my floor and had an electrician friend come to have a look at connecting to consumer unit and connecting up the appliances.

He's told me they can't both be connected to the 10mm cable from the fuse box however from what I read on the forums it seems this is the norm, is he right or do I need a different electrician ?

He has said that he can connect the hob to the 10mm and the oven to the downstairs ring however that makes no sense to me at all.

any advice ?

thanks in advance Rob

Total current without diversity of the two appliances is well within the current carrying capacity for a 10mm cable and a 4kw oven shouldn't be connected to the ring.

:grinningelf:OMG, they got tinternet in biddle now.:6:

Based on the info you have given your electrician is giving you poor advice.....yes you do need another!

Take 10 mm into kitchen then in an accessible unit fit a 2way enclosure rcd at c.u then in this unit main switch then 32a hob and 16a oven

overcomplicating. just split the feed to 2 outlets.

Suggest you find another electrician!! The one you've got sounds faulty and needs a re-boot.

Absolutely nothing wrong at all with a 2 outlet radial circuit supplying 11kW (before diversity) on a 10mm cable.

You might like to look at your suggestion again, matey.

as above. 10mm to cooker isolator, then split to 2 outlets. each in 4mm or 6mm. or, if both appliances are together, a dual outlet plate. and sack the pillock.

What's wrong with my idea?
The 10 mm gos into kitchen then split it in a 2way enclosure
then supply's power for the two appliances

Dual outlet plate is the way to go

So then at the consumer unit supplying this cable. What mcb would everyone fit?

B32 would be fine! Though as a 10mm's been put there then might as well make it a B40 'just because'.

nothing wrong with it. just a bit overkill.

Me thinks you need to consult (and pay) a sparky who knows what he's doing.

Even if the spark has minimal experience...im not sure how he can possibly justify saying they can't be both split off a 10mm t+e ...

pretty obvious really. im guessing he doesn't know his cable calcs

I think the main problem with the original electricians advise is his suggestion that the 4kw oven can be run off the ring. That alone makes me wonder if he is actually an electrician.

Thanks very much for the helpful answers, have posted on rated people. The cable is there, I have a dual ccu and a 45a switch, any advise on how much I should be paying for these to be connected ?
first quote of £200 seems very hefty.

cheers

Oh dear
There is another thread on this forum dedicated to those who want to make laughter

If possible try and get a friend or relative who can give word of mouth experience of a reputable spark

You should be asking yourself, What's RIGHT with it!! Talk about overkill, for gods sake!!

I'd have no problem or hesitation at all about using a 6mm cable to supply both these loads, seeing as a 32A OCPD sitting on 6mm cable is good for 15 KW, so were already on overkill as far as the 10mm cable size that's installed.

Back to the OP. .....This so-called electrician friend of yours, sounds like an under qualified inexperienced DI that are now flooding the domestic industry. Find an electrician that's been in the trading as an electrician a good number of years, or by trusted recommendation from friends/relatives!!
