I will soon be installing a new vent fan in my master bathroom - a combination fan/light/bluetooth speaker from a local big box store. My current switch box has 3 switches: 1 for the vanity light which will not be touched, 1 for the fan, and 1 for the light. I have a 14/2 wire entering the box, a 14/2 leaving the box for the vanity, and a 14/3 leaving the box for the current fan. Left switch is the vanity, middle switch is the fan light, and right switch is the fan itself.

The new fan has its own necessary switch that controls the light, fan, and speaker all in one switch so obviously I will be combining 2 switches into the single new switch. My plan is to keep the vanity switch, have the new combo switch in the middle where the fan light is now, and add a single gang nightlight where the current fan only switch is.

The new fan box has a hot, neutral, and ground to connect. The new switch has a green ground, a white neutral, a black for power, and a red. According to the wiring diagram, the red will tie into the black from the fan, white to the neutral bundle, ground to ground and black to the feed.

Do I just cap off the now unnecessary red wire at both ends of the 14/3 wire since it will no longer be needed? Also, when removing the current right fan switch to add the nightlight, how is it wired differently from the current switch it is replacing?

Thanks for any help, guys. I understand electricity is dangerous and have no problem having an electrician do this but this is a job I feel I can definitely tackle myself.

Tom welcome to the forum as for the vanity light is good and you want to use the middle switch to control your new system. It sounds to me like you just need 1 switch if your unit has 1 black wire for the hot which you are correct the white is the neutral the green is ground and red hooks to the new unit. What I’m confused about is the night light for the 3rd switch. If you attempt this make sure the breaker is off

Are you saying you have 1 switch that is 14/3 with ground what’s the 3 rd wire for. Is that a 3 way switch
