apprentice just phoned me he`s 16 been working with a firm since last summer 4 days working 1 day release in tech. he is going to have his tonsils out later this month and his boss has told him he wont get sick pay as he is an apprentice and hasnt paid anything into the system, he wanted me to confirm this for him but i`m not 100% anyone know for sure?

Well would very much depend on his T+C's but he would at least be entitled to statutary sick pay, which isnt a great deal. Mosy companies will give you nothing if you have been working for them for less then 1 year though, so probably just statutary.

The weekly rate of SSP is £79.15 for employees with average weekly earnings of £97 or more. The SSP daily rate is the weekly rate of SSP divided by the number of qualifying days in the week and then multiplied by the number of qualifying days of incapacity in the week, rounded up to the nearest penny. For SSP purposes, weeks begin on Sunday and end on Saturday.

Well thats considerably better then I thought it was! So yes he will get something and it is his employers duty to sort out if he is PAYE.

thanks everyone, but i just spoke to a friend of mine and he directed him / me to a HM website, national wages for 16 year old apprentice £95 per week (38hours @ £2.50 per hour) which is what he gets, this falls under minimum level for national ins contributions and therefore is not entitled to sick pay

Bloody hell thats a national minimum rate for apprentices, I did'nt think anyone actually got paid that little!
Soo its bit of a scam with the sick pay thin if he got paid £2 a week more....

i think its too much if someone is on £97 per week to get £79 sick pay when someone on £300 a week also gets £79.
it should be based on how long you have worked and how much you have paid into the system.
16 year old working a couple of months happy to be on nearly full wages will drag his heels coming back to work and in the end its the tax payer who ends up paying
30 year old with mortgage and couple of kids on same sick pay would be back in half the time

rant over

When I started my apprenticeship in contracting back in the 70s you did not get paid any money by the company when you was off on the sick and it is still the same now all you get is SSP from the state

Well I'd rather someone who is doing something productive with their life get a bit of sick pay, than some of the blaggers in this country who have never paid into the system getting free houses and benefits.

You are right it is a disgrace it does not pay to work if you are young!

If the company is a JIB member company check the JIB website as these companies have to pay an enhanced sick pay which is alot more than the satutory sick pay.
There will be contact details for someone to phone or email about this on the JIB website.
Your sons boss is at it

Conning B*******.

Well when your talking pence for an apprentices wages, you would think any decent employer would pay at least half wages for a genuine rerason like this. If nothing it instills a bit of resentment against the employer, and in the long term I think that resentment could cost the employer more then the £50 a week he stinged out on!

But in general thats what you get with contracting all the time, they think they get one over on you but at the end of the day all they are doing is ebbing away peoples morale and willingness to put themselves out. Makes you wonder why this industry is going down the pan.

well i wouldnt have an apprentice again, i had one then after he qualified he left me in the lurch, i was struggling to cope with my work load as i had been chasing work to keep him in a job, then, to add insult to injury he approached my customers to do their work as i was letting them down. you are an unpaid teacher and when they start to get good they leave.
thats just my experience mind you.

Don't think it applies to apprentices as they could end up with more money on the sick than if they where working.
