Hi,

Was fitting a new light in bedroom today. Have two earth wires, two live (red) and two black in the ceiling rose. Connected it up and the switch is not working, the light is on all the time and will not switch on/off. Have put the two reds in loop and light is in connected in the rose with teh two black wires - No Joy! have tried different combinations but no luck :banghead:. The other lights upstairs are working fine.

Any advice gratefully received
Regards
Edddiec

Whatever you do do not operate the light switch!

It sounds as if the "loop in" circuit is at the end of the loop, and one pair is the live and neutral feed and the other pair is the switch feed and switch wire.

if you could'nt be bothered to note where each cable was before, then *********. call in an electrician and get it fixed properly.

at least that will test the OCPD.

Not as easy as you thought ey haha

or get one of those bayonet holders with a built-in switch. to the OP. a hint. 1 of those black wires is not a neutral. but you won't know which one without access to test equipment . and i don't mean a neon screwdriver.

Stop giving our trade secrets away :D Everyone knows we only use a neutral colour as a switch live just to confuse people into thinking our job is harder than it actually is :D

You guys obviously prefer to make people feel bad rather than give out advice - not exactly very friendly to new members but hey I can take that . Yes I did note the wiring prior to disconnecting the original light and I put the new light in exactly the same way. If the switch was blown how would that manifest itself - would the switch not work the light and it would not switch on at all?

Try to be a bit more constructive guys - it's like having a conversation with the two guys in the box from the muppets!

It's not a DIY forum that's why people don't give advice!!

This is a forum for sparks who have spent thousands of pounds on training and who have put decades into learning thier craft. Its not a place to give out advice to all and sundry.

You have been given an excellant piece of advice which is to get the yellow pages and call an electrician what more do you want?
