Ok, at which point will I hurt anyone? All I am doing is digging some trenches and buying some hardware - a professional will be connecting it all up. I thought I made that bit quite clear.

I was just trying to get an idea of what hardware I might need and the route (and number) of the trenches I might have to dig - which may involve me having to hire a digger or even get someone with moling equipment in.

dmahon- as you're probably aware by now, you're not gonna be told how to do the job.
there are a Lot of people like you come here just about every day asking how to do all manors of things.
As Murdoch rightly pointed out, we are professionals that sell our skills for a living. I don't know what You do for a living, but would you work for free or tell someone how to do your job for free?
the best advice you will get here is 'get an electrician in'
if you say where you are, someone on here may be able to help you.
I have no problem giving diy'ers advice on how to do certain things, but jobs like this are a different story.

make sure when you're digging, it's a minimum of 500mm deep. as for 1 spade, with your longest run being 50m, you'd be there a while!

I'm not allowed to do it. I will have to get an electrician in. That was never in question, no matter how much some peoples attitude here tries to put me off sparkies in general. I suppose I could do it myself and get building control in to check it, but I suspect that will be more expensive than just paying an electrician in the first place and having never done so before, I don't want to deal with the consumer box myself anyway.

I'd be happy to tell someone how to do my job - they can go down the library and get a book on it anytime they like anyway. In fact what I do gets shown on TV all the time. People still come to me for a proper job. I'm sure I can get a book on electrical connections too, so I don't know why you're trying to be all secretive about it. I'm only trying to find out more about it and I will be getting a professional in to do a proper job too. Should I just get a few electricians round and just give it the chap with the cheapest quote? Race to the bottom? He's an electrician after all and obviously will do it right, so why not just go for the cheapest solution? If no-one will tell me any better here, how am I to know that the cheapest solution might not be the best?

My final question - what qualifications should I look for (other than part P registered, which is needed for this job)? It seems that just about anyone can do a part P course in a few days - I assume that I should be looking for more?

You could post your area and someone from the forums might be able to help.

Personal recommedation is probably best, for someone who has a "published" address so you know where they operate from.

Got 2 or 3 prices

As you have hinted at in your original post, there are several ways of supplying power to your sheds. However, coming up with the 'best' design is not as simple as you seem to think. There are various things to consider: existing earthing arrangement, existing loading on the supply, the loads you intend to connect in the sheds, whether these will be used together or not, whether loss of power would be a problem, the different possible routing of cables inside and outside the house, whether there is, or will be, any metallic services pipes to the sheds, whether any of the sheds have a metal structure, etc, etc. Like several of us have said, why not get someone on here round to take a look and discuss the issues first hand? (Apologies for lack of line breaks.)

OP the reason people may have been abit funny with you, is because - what you're asking is abit strange, and makes people think you are doing the job yourself - you've got no reason to know the answer to any of this unless you are doing it yourself.

You should get several quotes from reputable sparks, are go with a competitive price - if you get 5quotes and 1 is miles cheaper, then you can be safe to think that this is probably not the best option to choose.

The reason behind you're question, on a certain aspect i can understand...you don't know who you're employing, you don't know whether they're taking you for a ride as regards to terminology and whether they're adding unnecessary work to the bill.

However, this is why the background research is important too who you are employing - you shouldn't have to ask questions like this and you should trust who you are employing.
