    It may not be the spring type, a few have two blades and are secured into the ceiling by twisting clockwise. To remove simply twist it anticlockwise, (I think it's that way round!) if it is that type you'll know because it'll pop out really easily whereas no amount of pulling will drop it.

    Were the sockets singles or doubles? Whilst not technically correct it would be acceptable in practice if both sockets were singles, as this would be no different to a double socket on a spur.

    Spacing between clusters of sockets and switches

    For standard white accessories a gap of exactly one inch between the centres of the fixing lug holes and the plates will butt together perfectly. That's my default option unless there is a likelihood of flat plate accessories in the future.
