Well after a fair bit of head scratching I found the issue!!!!! Looks like whoever did the original install about 60 years ago nicked the line when stripping the outer insulation. Over time moisture has got to the copper and corroded it to push out of the nick and make enough of a path to the...
Have a little more progress. I did have a couple of neons in the ring - cheers!!! I have traced the fault down to the final 2 double gang sockets in the ring. One of which was replaced on Saturday!!!! So looks like floor up and find the issue then probably replace cable, but that's tomorrows...
Cheers for the suggestions.
I have now double checked where I split the ring and retested and one half of ring is good. No idea how both were testing bad. So that's progress. Part of the problem is that there is only 1 ring covering downstairs and the 'room in roof' plus 2 radials. The ring...
I am not a qualified electrician, I was employed as an electrician after my MoD electronics apprenticeship but that was 30 odd years ago. So I have basic skills and an insulation tester with a low resistance capability.
This is an old installation with a new cu installed in 2014 (EICR etc...
Cheers for all the suggestions. I have ordered some cat6 suitable for outdoor use :)
So just a couple of holes to drill and a bit of clipping.
Thanks again.
Cheers all. Think I will go for outside cat6. It will be nice and reliable and fast.
Circuits are on different RCB's so not great for speed.
The 1200Mbps seem to be over £100. Where as exterior cat6 cable is about £10 for 10 meters.
Cheers. I have not had great luck with them before plus they don't get very high data transfer rates even if they are rated at 1200Mbps.
Plus they aren't cheap and i have lots of cat5/6 cable :)
I realise putting mains cables in a cavity is a no no but I need to get a cat5/6 cable from downstairs to upstairs in a dorma bungalow and thought the cavity might be a good route?
So does anyone have any tips to get a network cable through a cavity?
Cheers for any help.
Forgot to say the...
I hope I am not teaching you to suck eggs, if I am I apologise.
Hospital saddles used to be mandatory in hospitals as the staff needed to clean behind them!! So sets to every thing, used to be a right pain. Going back many years here just after my apprenticeship.
Tel you have a PM re another job :)
It's good just to get a very rough idea. I fully understand the need to see the job. It helps make a decision as to have a quote to install supply or not.
I hate getting multiple trades people to quote as some of them will have wasted their time when I...
Cheers all. Ball park figure is a great start, thanks.
Long story but should decide on Monday if we need someone to come round and quote properly.
Thanks very much.
Trying to get an ball park idea on costs to get 2 double sockets and a light in the garage. Blackpool Area.
New consumer unit fitted in 2014 that has spare ways.
At a guess route for cable would be from consumer unit up to loft (4m) across loft to rear (10m) then to armoured? Down outside of...
Good to hear you are well. Extra income always good but not sure I would want to have to get dementia for it.
Calorific intake always difficult to manage, so many tempting food out there not to mention beer :)
If you are still working might need you Jan as EICR renewal due then! Doesn't seem...
