an old fuse box needs replacing and some of the old cabling needs to be extended to reach the new mcb s. somebody told me that it would be ok to crimp new cables on, but I would always solder and heat shrink as I know that does not derate the cable. any thoughts?

There are a number of ways to skin a cat. Are you an electrician?

You could mount abit of din rail in an appropriate enclosure with the correct rated din rail connectors and label up correctly.

To the OP - if you're talking about only extending individual cores within the new CU enclosure then you only need appropriately rated MF connectors , I use a lot of the Ideal 'In sure' type as the 2,3 and 4 port versions are all rated at 32 amps. But for anything bigger in the CU such as 6 or 10mm I'd probably go with the proper crimps.
