Discuss neff oven tripping rcd changing temp in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

As mentioned it could be leakage to earth, how old is the oven?

about 5 years old I believe

ok so not sure if this is progress

i know the top oven thermostat and dial etc work. the white and red lead for this thermo goes to a thermo cut out on top of oven.

I ran this lead from top thermo cut out to bottom thermostat and it didn't trip the electrics and I could turn up temp. turned it all off after a few minutes.

would this assume faulty thermo cut out for bottom oven that is circled in yellow to the left?

the other lead running from top thermo cut out goes to something else which I can't see as would need to take oven right out from back again. bottom one which is located at back was going into the bottom element so assume the top thermo cut out is going to top element?

thanks!

hi all
need a bit of help!

i have a neff oven that has been working fine for 3 years. top oven all works fine.

bottom oven I can choose from fan grill etc with the dial but as soon as I change temp from 0 within a few seconds it trips the rcd.

I bought a new bottom element and still same issue. don' think there is anything wrong with old one as multimeter shows continuity.

took thing apart and even swapped thermo from top oven with bottom and still trips so must be a bottom wiring issue?

there are 4 wires coming from the bottom thermostat dial. process of elimination I removed each wire and flicked power back on. it only seemed to trip when the red and white lead was connected - I followed this lead and it goes to where the bottom element goes into a small unit which I'm not sure what it is. on the image it is near the top with the red and white lead going into it. I put multi meter on this unit and it seems to have continuity.

I did notice behind this area above, the back plate is burnt / marked

all cables looked attached properly and none were frayed but some look black from the above

just to add I done all the tests without the bottom element attached. as it was tripping with or without it. assume if it was the element and I removed it, it shouldn't trip?

please see images attached if they help

thanks in advance really appreciate

Boycy down the Nag's head should be able to help, sorry see my previous post.

Or really the best way of fault finding on a cooker. Running leads about. Are you sure you know what your doing?

As said allready maybe time to get a pro in you’ve done as much as you can

Checking continuity of wires with a multimeter is not checking theyre, or any of the other components insulataion to earth. You need somebody with correct test equipment, i however doubt repairing a 5yr old appliance is an economic solution if you do have to get a pro in.

the burn mark on the rear cover plate appears to line up with the scorched wires circled in the pic.that;s where I'd be investigating.

recently repaired our 21 year old oven. was the bottom element.1st fault since installation in 1997.

Yea were all capable of doing it ourselves as we have the right equipment, but i think if somebody needs to get an appliance engineer in you can soon get in to the costs of a new oven

that burn mark is apparently fumes over time from the bottom oven

thermostat wire goes into thermal cut out. other lead from thermal cut out has another 2 spade connectors - 1 goes into element which I've removed and other goes right down to bottom of oven where it is insulated. no idea what this is!

when I remove this 3 spade connector from thermal cut out It doesn't trip the rcd.

Hi - the thermal cut out will be in series with the oven wiring. Disconnecting it means the oven won't run (hopefully) and so it's not a surprise it's also stopped tripping the RCD. I am concerned for your safety with those exposed live components and an unknown fault present. My advice is to please stop experimenting and get some help :)

ok thanks will do. was just curious what the bottom prong right at the bottom was.

the fan still turned on and the thermostat light came on even with the thermal cut out wire removed and i could change the temp dial with no trip.

IR test on the element is the first thing to do.

The other prong is probably the neutral to the element? Cant see from the pics, but as others have said please stop playing now somethings gonna go bang
but that's how we learn.
1 bang........ we rethink
2 bangs....... we ask on the forum
3 bangs...... we give up and call a spark.

update

it was lower bottom element tripping rcd.

replaced and is fine but one question

when I went to replace the element that goes around the fan there are 3 wires coming from the back. the photo I took only had 2 wires connected to the element so this must have popped of when removing as it's quite short and can only reach the hole where the element goes. I can't workout where it should go on the element though or does matter? the other end connects to the grill element situated at top of lower oven. this element has 4 connections and is coming off the last one.

in the element around the fan I have a wire attached on prong 2 and wire on 4. this is what I took a photo of.

does it matter if this other wire goes on 1 or 3?

hope that makes sense

everything works but thermo doesn' go off on grill setting - must be cos of above wire

cheers!

I know this is a few years ago but, as I'm having a similar problem and have just replaced the fan oven element, I wondered if you had resolved the third wire issue.
