House been rewired and want to futurise for PV panel.
What cable size is required back to consumer unit?

Aim for below 1% volt drop and some manufacturers will specify a minimum CSA.
 
No - 6mm is not excessive. Go for it. The cost difference is peanuts in the greater scheme of things and you're less likely to suffer VD problems with thicker cable.

As whinmoor said 6mm makes it no different especially if you already have that cable to use.
 
Use SWA then no RCD required
