Social network advertising?

Hi all I'm starting on my own on the side of my employer next year and was wondering if anybody had used any social networking sites for free advertisement? Just something I'm looking into to start to build a small client base, anyone else tried this and had any success?

I did the same, Personally I found word of the mouth is the way forward. Have not many leads from and of the free advertising i have used
