I reckon it's best just to print everything out and put it in a physical folder for when you do your tax return at the end of the year; it has worked that way for hundreds of years before computers were discovered so I don't see any reason to change that now.

I do it all on on paper. It can't just suddenly vanish then! I only keep a secondary record on my PC.

a4 polly pocket 1 per week with sheet on front with in/out secondary file kept on pc
Thank god Im now PAYE :D

I have fitted a second hard drive and got a bit of freeware that backs up all my docs to the second hard drive each time I turn the machine on.

I've got a spare XP pc and I wondering if I could use this as a "central" back up for our main desktop and 2 x laptops.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks

Mine all goes into a shoe box or two and then handed to my accountant. Luckily she is my best mates misses and she keeps us both organised.

I just guess mine minus what i need for beer :) ..... this way my liver will fail long before the taxman gets me

I use quicken 2004 and it back up to an external network hard drive.
I did a 3 page print out that lets me do my tax return- takes 20 mins to put into TaxCalc- another program that costs £27

The secret is to enter each transaction daily throughout the year and keep ontop of it

I have a external hard drive but I use a memeory stick but my main files are 5 excell worksheets Bank,Sales,Milage,Purchase and end of month totals that works out my tax bill these are backed weekly-2weekly then I will back up invoices and other docs monthy its not that i am smart its just that I worked on BMS systems 26 years ago and got a reputation for backing them up because I always heard "i was going to back up a whole months work just before it crashed" speech ironically fast forward to today and i am constantly surprised when I hear an author on the TV or radio say "I am desperate to get my laptop that I either left on the train or got stolen as it has 2 years work on it plus 95% of my new book and all I can think of is a £6 memory stick but it seems to be the way of the world

Have main and backup computers all syncronised and paper all in boxes. Problem is, they are all in the same building... eek

Remember the old saying regarding computers... "If it's not in 3 places, then it doesn't exist at all."

I had some digital photos saved on 2 separate computers a few years ago. I had a hard-drive fail on one, so ordered a replacement. A few days later, the other PC drive failed.... Luckily, on the 2nd unit it was the driver board and I repaired it. Made me realise why the saying is tried and tested.

I use Quickbooks for the benefit of it doing all the maths for you, but everything gets paper filed religously by date, including copies of all invoices generated, and the system gets backed up in two different places digitally. The only thing I want to be going down on me is a hot blonde.

Quickbooks is the new version of the program I have

The main difference is the program I have cost £30 (8 years ago) and does not cost any recurring fees.

There is no monthly fee or ongoing costs

I've just upgraded to Quickbooks 2012 and all it cost was £133 @ Costco.

A bargain for a package that does estimates, invoices, customer data base and all your accounts.

Another way is to use the cloud and not just one cloud offering but maybe two? This plus hard drive duplicates should ensure that your information will still be available even if the worst happens and your house burns down with all your computer gear and documentation.
