Like you, my first 20 minutes fiddling with these were frustrating. Then I got the knack and for T&E up to 2.5 and singles they work well enough to hold a place in my main grab bag. Might be worth fiddling a little longer before rejecting.

I have one and its only use is for cutting brass screws using the threaded hold slicing bit!
Useless for crimping, barely tolerable as wire stripper.
Those are very like the Ideal T-stripper style of tool, work very well for wire stripping. The smaller sized one (below electrical power work) is nice and sharp and does a decent job of stripping PTFE wire which is difficult. For example:

Builders love them as they're perfect for rough work. Definitely serve a purpose, but I never carry mine to work as it takes up too much valuable toolbox space.

i have a 110V makita recip. and an Aldi 20V cordless. the cordless one is brill. only cost around £60 with battery and charger.
I seen the Aldi impact driver bare tool for about £10 , couldn't believe it really
