Current Oven bulb is Halogen G9 base 12.0V 2.5W, 5W Max per manual; Exact replacement not available. Best match is 120V 25W bulbs. Is it advisable to use these? in general why are oven bulbs low voltage? Thank you
I would have to say no since you stated 5 watts max per bulb I don’t think the bulb base will get to hot. I’m not sure about the low voltage on your bulbs, mine is 120vacCurrent Oven bulb is Halogen G9 base 12.0V 2.5W, 5W Max per manual; Exact replacement not available. Best match is 120V 25W bulbs. I've never come across an oven with a low voltage lamp. All have had a lamp that runs at the full supply voltage, except for one, that had two lamps in series.in general why are oven bulbs low voltage?
I would be willing to bet it’s 120vac. Good luckCould it be 120v not 12 . 0v? Is it possible that the decimal is infact just a little spot of dirt? It is unusual for a bulb to have a voltage rating with a decimal point printed on it.
Welcome to the forum mate.
A 120V bulb will not work on 12V
What make and model is your oven?
have you tried contacting the manufacturer to see what they say about the bulbs?
Manual for the appliance indicates 5W max. The original bulb is Sylvania Capsylite G9 marked what I read as 2.5W and 12 V. thnak you for the guidance. Unable to get any informaiton from the manufacturer Ktichen Aid/Whirlpool. Their site is selling a replacement bulb for ~34 USD.That is (possibly a copy of) an Osram sylvania 66725 oven 120v 25w 2800k g9 halogen light bulb
of which there seems to be a complete shortage of stock everywhere!
There are similar things available, but I don't know if they are rated for the oven environment, eg:
There seems to be confusion over the rating - for example, where did the suggestion that it was only 2.5W come from - you suggest the manual says 5W max, but I don't think they ever made such bulbs in 5W rating.
thank youI read that as 120v (on the lamp picture)
I'm still intrigued by this issue.thank you
This lamp has a G4 base, not a G9. Theses aren't uncommon. I just changed a whole batch of them for LED equivalents in my newly acquired caravan

Brianmoore was commenting on my previous post #14 - I was showing the G4 12V 5W version is used on the same brand of appliance the OP has (I'm not saying necessarily on his oven), but it's on a G4 base as I commented.
and if he's shoving 120V up a 12V bulb??? bumps a daisy. You can use the G4 Bulb. The only difference with the G9 is the shape of the metal prongs which you can bend if needed.
You can find the same spec bulb 12v 5W for much cheaper
I didn’t want to put a disagree red mark against your first post, but it is important to read the details thoroughly before offering adviceYou can use the G4 Bulb. The only difference with the G9 is the shape of the metal prongs which you can bend if needed.

I’m being questioned on my advice here. Fair enough.and if he's shoving 120V up a 12V bulb??? bumps a daisy.
I have a Kitchenaid Wall Oven using the identical bulb. In the manual for the oven, it states “The oven lights are 12-volt, 5-watt maximum halogen bulbs.” I see a few posts here saying to get a 120v bulb and although misleading based on what’s written on the bulb, I trust the manual.
Interesting mate. Personally I'd go with what the manufacturer has put on the bulb rather than the manual.
Any change of taking a pic of the manual where it states the bulb requirements and posting it up on here.
