These are identifying the swith wires, feeds,loop feeds etc so when they come back to 2nd fix they know what each cable is.
Every sparks seems to have a different way of marking cables and i've had to bell out an entire lighting rewire before connecting because someone else has wired it!

I think the batteries youre talking about are PS996's but they are 6volt.
Why not connect them to a 240ac/12dc transformer like on normal low voltage downlights then youve got no run flat issue as your on mains supply (they do get warm though!).
