Hi all
New here
Looking for some advice! AM I JUST BEING THICK ?

I’m fully qualified jib registered
Electrician.

Ive just done my part p with hopes of eventually going self employed But want to build up some work first as I’m still currently employed with a firm doing maintenance.
From what I’ve read/seen it seems to be a lot easier to be signed up to a scheme to submit works done to local authorities but how do I do it if I’m not ?! And are thier any costs etc involved ? Obviously I can’t do part p works to be assessed by a scheme unless I’m actually doing that work ,so how do I get that work done and signed off properly

Thanks MAX !

Ahhhh..

The old chicken and the egg

Most domesticated installers I know have done jobs prior and then use one off them for their scam assessment

Good speed...

Not sure about other schemes but Stroma allow your initial assessment to be in your own property. You have 30 days to notify work so you could do some work in your own house and use that for your assessment then notify it afterwards.

I know 3 people who used a board change in their own house to pass their niceic domesticated installer scam

Not sure if this is still allowed

But it certainly was a few years ago

BTW part P isn't a qualification. You cant 'do your part P'. If you've been told otherwise and paid for a Part P course you've been conned. You stated at the start of your post you are fully qualified, all you needed to do was read the document which is freely available on-line.

Ive just done 18th edition update I’m jib registered installation electrician but I always thought you needed part p for certain domestic works? Am I wrong if so could you post the link to the document your talking about please thanks for your reply

Hi Max welcome,

I set up on my own a few years back, had plenty of electrical experience but actually getting yourself all set up is all research and asking the ‘stupid questions’. I’m currently with ELECSA and iv never paid for any part p training. As ab electrician its hours of self teaching to be up to speed with part p but I always have the guide handy. All I needed was electrician quals and the 18th edition. Before I was with a scheme i used to tell the owner of the property to inform building regs and they would send and assessor out to check my work. It was £180 for this so joining a scheme is well worth it

Once again Part P is not a qualification or a form of approval. It is a buildings regulations document which in short states that all work in dwellings must comply with Bs7671, and that certain jobs such as CU replacements and new circuits must be notified to BC. The latter is the stumbling block as notifying jobs without being part of a scheme such as NAPIT/NICEIC/STROMA etc is an expensive ballache. Being a member of such a scheme enables cheap and simple notification. Doing a Part P course will not enable you to notify jobs, or make you 'Part P approved', it is simply a con and it staggers me that there is still a mistaken belief in 'doing my part P'. If you are a qualified electrician then you can join a scheme, notify jobs and fully comply with part P.
