Tell your gaffer how you feel mate, have a good long talk to him or her and set your stall out. Ask if you can pick your own team.
I had a situation once when some of my team on a council job were dragging the rest of us down. The ones who were good at their jobs were carrying clowns who were regularly screwing basic things up. I was regularly still at work at 7pm.
I had the conversation and was told that he'd look into it and get back to me. Eventually I had to give him an ultimatum, either they went off my squad or I'd quit. I said I'd leave it with him for 2 weeks, when the 2 weeks had passed I pulled my gaffer again and asked him how it was going to pan out. He asked me who I wanted on my squad and who I wanted off it.
On the following Monday I had what I wanted but if it had backfired on me I was prepared to walk and would have done.
Life is too short to waste time on crap like this mate. You work to live, not the other way round. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for all the replies folks, actually you have all confirmed my suspicions. I either quit, or chill. I', not going to change anything.

I'm going to sleep on it. Maybe when I've got things in order in a year or so, I'll duck out and get back to a 'proper' job.

Thanks all

Voltz

How long have you been in the job. If only a short while it may be that you can adapt, albeit with the proviso that you don't treat it as a career ending point and get 'institutionalised' yourself.

It’s a pity you’ve found yourself in this position Voltz. It’s not of your making and unless you get backing you’re sunk.

But I also get the feeling as the new boy you’re being like “Billy Wizz” and trying to make a name for yourself. Be careful how you do that in an established department, it won’t go down well if you start ruffling feathers.

Only once have I worked for an agency but I found myself as shift engineer at a ceramics company along with two others from the same agency.*

One of our number was forever in the office singing his own praises to the point the company appointed him engineering manager and shunted their own guy sideward. The knock on effect the other lad I had to go on to 12Hr shifts which didn’t go down too well with either of us. Under his leadership the place was in chaos.
With the help of the former manager it took us just over a month before our new boss was off work with stress. Neither of us refused to do anything, in fact we followed his instructions to the N[SUP]th[/SUP] degree, knowing full well it wasn’t going to work.

Once he’d gone things got done to time and worked, breakdowns were dealt with promptly, it was a relaxed happy place to work.

The ironic bit:
I went to see the MD to tell him I was leaving to go back in to quarrying, he had wanted to see me to tell me the engineering manager was retiring and to ask if I wanted the job. The other guy was to be taken on permanently. A week later he handed his notice in he was going back into the industry he’d previously worked in.

*I’ve seen a lot of posts by members here about agencies. I’ll say I had no problem what so ever and it was a reasonable rate of pay as they only dealt with engineering staff.
