I'm getting mixed reviews on what you need to do in regards to certification. I am a recently qualified electrician and have no part P, Napit, NIC etc but the firm I work for does so at the moment I have no real need to. But when it comes to my private jobs is it vital that all work no matter how small needs to have a certificate or is it only when building control/regulations or a managing agent/estate agent require you to produce one? Please help. Everyone has a different opinion.

thanks in advance.

Matt.

a certificate should be completed for any job other than like for like replacement. either MWC or EIC. the LABC notification is a different ball game.

Ok thank you. Excuse my ignorance. But what is an LABC notification.

read part p of the building regs. unless you are in scotland or ireland, that is.

Haha people like you are awesome for these forums. See I thought this is where people who were stuck or in experienced such as myself came for help. I must of got it wrong. Thanks though.

Come on matey, you've got to try a bit.

Have you got the BGB or the OSG?

Are you in England or Wales? or Scotland or Northern Ireland?

this is one of the problems with short courses. more than half of what you should know is not taught. not your fault. notification concerns any new circuits, work in special locations , and a few more, whereby you have to notify your local building control of the work. this is usually done through niceic, elecsa ot napit, once you have joined.

I take it that the firm you work for does all the testing and certification then?
Are you suitably qualified (or experienced) to carry out this work unsupervised on your "private jobs"?
Please forgive us old cynics, but we are all competing for work with people who don't really know what they are doing, and it makes many of us feel like we wasted 3 or 4 years of our young lives learning the trade the long and hard way.

Sorry for snapping. But I've had it before where people don't want to help. I studied at college for 3 years and completed my AM2 and apprenticeship. But that really doesn't mean anything. They rush you through loads of the important stuff especially regulations and test and inspect. Don't mean to sound incompetent and maybe I am slightly lazy just asking instead of reading the books myself. But I often struggle with literature and find listening to people with experience is better. Thanks.

Generally we don't bite BUT people who expect everything on a plate aren't going to learn where to find the answers in their books.

download part p from planning portal. bear in mind that there are changes due next month. there's a couple of threads about it on here if you search.

Ok so you still supply Certs on all aspects of work. Just the areas that building control need to be notified about they will also want to see Certs for notifiable work. If you answer that Murdoch I promise I'll get reading. ;)

I've recently been assessed for part p by niceic and the focus was not what I knew so much as where do I find the required information.
I knew the answers to all the questions but I still went to the appropriate books and quoted the answers. I'd be a fool not to!
The guys on here are a great support resource but nobody likes answering the same questions over and over. Search before you ask as the answer is nearly always there, somewhere.
Happy reading and searching.
