Hello, I've been asked to provide an annual test certificate on some fire alarms and emergency lighting in a guest house. I see that there are courses on fire alarms are these really necessary? The certificates are very basic so is the guidance with the bsi standard. What do others do with testing?
 
Although I have some knowledge of fire alarms and emergency lighting,

I will not do testing or inspection of either as I do not believe I have the qualifications required to prove I am competent .

if it was one of my customers, I would suggest they get a quote from a fire alarm company that I have worked with in the past.
 
Does your liability insurance cover you for such work?

Are you suitably trained and experienced to do the work?
Can you back up the above with evidence from a 3rd party who has assessed you and deemed you suitably trained, experienced and competent to do the work and also prove that they were competent to assess you?

Could you stand up in court, if things went pear shaped and under cross examination convince experts with years more experience that you that you knew what you were doing?
 
Thanks, I've seen the tests being done and was only considering D graded systems. I assumed it would be following manufacturer instructions as the bsi standard caveats it's instructions with following them and the same as functional tests post installation. It's good to know others would avoid this work and I expect I will follow suit

I was wondering if alarm companies milk it a bit. I need to check my insurance but owning a copy of the standards (with the limited information they contain) and paying £450 for a training course would make it prohibitive.
