Hi

There is a lighting circuit fault in a property with the downstairs lighting circuit. I have tested the voltage and there is 230v on both line and neutral conductors going to the light pendnat although the pendant (any pendant) isnt showing light . no changes have been made to the lighting . there is a pendant in the hall and there is downlights around 12 in total and i have checked the junction boxes for the downlights and there is no loose connections
??

thanks

What are you measuring this voltage with?
You are probably best doing continuity tests.

using a multifunction tester testing between earth and line and earth and neutral on the ceiling rose

You shouldn't have 230v between earth and neutral. Check polarity. If polarity is right, neutral has a break in it somewhere.
i removed the switch line also and then the pendant was still live

You need to do continuity tests.
As above you shouldn't have 230v between neutral/earth, are you getting this?

What about between L and N? Did you measure that voltage?
yes its 230v i am going back there today to get access to the final junction box for the other downlights to see if there is any loose connections. its the strangest fault ive seen

Measuring voltage is not going to verify to effectiveness of conductors. Have you tried doing an earth fault loop impedance test across line and neutral.

I will do this at the next visit and zs at the furthest point
