Hi everyone,
Looking for a bit of advice and guidance but feel I should supply some background information...
I am 23 and have recently qualified city and guilds level 3.
I have been doing my own little jobs for the firm I’m employed with on and off for some time. We are mainly a commercial outfit.
I have become increasingly unhappy in the last 3-4 months, working with an electrician who has a very difficult personality and in my opinion is also a bit rough. (I posted a while ago about the correct methods of installation for fire alarms...)
The previous year I had been working with the same electrician and found myself also feeling very unhappy. I discussed the situation with the electrician but he made no effort to improve his behavior toward me so I ended up going to our director and asking to be removed from the site. This was not the first complaint they had received toward this electrician.
A year later and I was once more put to work on one of his sites. Although his behavior towards me has improved, his general persona has not.
We have been doing a very stressful job in East London and in recent weeks been working up to 14 hour days not including travel back home (hour and a half each way)
These long hours combined with stressful relationships with colleges on site has really driven me into the ground. I also feel I’ve lost some of the passion for my work, looking at what’s been produced on this job and being unable to take pride in the end product.
My partner suggested I speak again to my director so I contacted him via email.
I basically said that I was very unhappy and felt that the hours I was working had a lot to do with this.
He pretty much told me that he was the one who was losing money and that I should be glad of the overtime, if I didn’t like it I should quit.
I told him I would think carefully about it and he was quick to tell me not to deliberate as I probably wasn’t committed to the job while I was in this frame of mind.
I found this infuriating as I pride myself on being a really hard worker, an ethic which certainly isn't shared by all his employees.
At any rate, I decided I'd had enough and handed my notice in.
I now find myself serving four weeks and looking for a new job in what are obviously not ideal circumstances given our economic status. I don’t regret my actions; I think sometimes you have to listen to what your instinct tells you.
I am going the standard route, CV and cover letter to all local companies.
I have a lot of friends who are builders etc who may be able to offer bits and pieces here and there.
My real question is with regard to the limitations of work I can do with my current qualifications.
I qualified during the switch over to the 17th so unfortunately I am only qualified to the 16th.
Is it worthwhile investing to update me, what about part P if I’m going to be doing some self employed work etc?
