As a forum and regular well established members we are happy to help anyone climbing the ladder of learning but the trend of lately is to see members asking questions without even bothering looking up or researching the answer prior. Now don't get me wrong here but if you can't just review your notes click the tinteret or sit back or consider the level of your query first then please move your question to the DIY section where it belongs.....

Im sick of seeing so called qualified 'competent' electricians asking levels of questions that would make me cringe in the DIY section.... E.G.

-RCD's don't provide overload protection if you think they do go flip burgers!

-Plastic or metal capping is not mechanical protection!

-100amp standard DP main switches also don't provide overload protection

-plugging in a £10 socket tester is not confirmation everything is up to standards....

Seriously the level of questions from so called 'Electricans' is getting so worrying that your making the plumbers look educated and brainy!

It actual just not on this site Darkwood.....were seeing some very doggy work out on the field, and its the simple jobs like em lighting, two way and intermediate switching, which seems to baffle them. Along with unsupported cables and chock blocks everywhere.

I like the questions that start along the lines of .... "I'm a fully qualified, time served industrial/commercial electrician and I dont normally do household stuff so I dont know about regs can you help ........ "

Totally agree darkwood, good post M8, and to add yes you do have to test and certify the premises after replacing mains tails, distribution board and earthing upgrades.

One of the worse I ever saw was one guy who actually fixed cable tray straight to a ceiling without unistrut behind it, I didn't say anything at that point. After we wired all the cables to a room we then told the guy who was a time served sparky apparently to ty wrap the cables to the tray. The look on his face was something I will not forget lol. Another was a lad with industrial experience who actually put a length of metal capping on the floor and flattened it with a hammer, he then actually installed the capping on top of 2x2.5 T&Es and never even realised the problem, they are everywhere out there, we are the only stop they have now a days on these forums to try to correct them, a sad situation really.

Another good last month from a Surrey Council Building Engineer....."i know the fire alarm should be minimum of grade L2 within a school but i have designed it to L4, as we dont have the money" "as for the disabled refuge and toilet alarms, were dont really cater for disabled children, and infact we only have 4 disabled kids at this school"........??

True.....but all project companies in that meeting could not believe their ears.....the last 2 schools he was involved in were taken to a hearing and forced in install lifts, ramps the lot

As has already been touched on im sick of people coming on saying mcb keeps tripping on X circuit so you ask were the test results ok did you load test etc and the same reply everytime... ill be doing that next time i go back, i mean if you want guidance then help yourself its almost mind numbing to think a 'competent' sparky will turn up at your house not carry out any testing make excuses and say he'll have to come back then as soon as he gets home straight on here 'doh! what do you think it is?'..

Sorry Im afraid my help and advice only comes to those that actually help themselves from now on and show at least they have tried as oppose to using this forum to resolve all their day to day problems that they just can't be bothered to follow the testing procedures or are just too incompetent to do the work they claim they are professed in.

I agree with darkwood, its the same old questions being asked and when you say what were the test results the general reply is that they didnt have time as it was late..... which we all know is cobblers.

Don't forget adding to an existing circuit as well

Not sure of his name I think it may be Chris Young, apologies beforehand it I have it wrong, but from 101 things you don;t need a builder for Chris reckons RCD stands for Reduced Circuit Device and thats on national TV for Gods sake

Agreed with all DW, good post.

A couple of months back there was a kick up and the DIY (destroy it yourself) section was born.

Maybe now would be the time to have our own section for the genuine time served sparks. Something along the lines of the Arms which has entry restrictions (which i dont meet). EG show JIB card or craftsmans cert etc to keep the pseudo sparks away and they can educate each other.

All well and good mate but I have worked all my life, or most of it for HMG as an Electrician with all the relevant quals and more than enough experience but no JIB card it wasn't needed
