Hi all, I have been searching the net for a while as I am interested in working in the offshore industry. I keep coming up with dead ends and companies who claim to have the answer but want a fee up front before they give you any information. I have seen some jobs advertised for rig electricians but they all require experience! How can you gain experience if you need experience to get a job in the first place?
Is there anybody out there who can shed any light on this for me?
Any advice is most welcome :-)

You would need to do various training courses first, in order to enhance your prospects of getting offshore. CompEx, Bosiet & MIST are I believe the minimum required to stand even the remotest chance af getting out there. I believe a rope access course would also be beneficial.

After that it's a matter of continual bombardment of the companies/agencies until hopefully it pays off, no guarantee though.

If you use the forum search function, you will see a number of threads on this topic.

Thanks for the info Lenny. I have just read a few other articles saying similar things. Looks like I,m gonna be spending some money :-(

It's a vicious circle, to earn big money, you need to spend big, and even then you are not guaranteed a start.

The Compex for instance, is around £1000.

I got a first trip offshore over the Christmas and New Year,it was hard going for me being away at that time of the year, but it was the only offer of offshore work I had in the ten months since I did the survival.
The best thing to do is get some onshore Oil & Gas experience in this country or Norway, for this country most sites now require the CompEx and a Safety Passport for a spark to get through the gate.
If you have Oil & Gas experience on your CV(real and not made up) it will be easier to get a job offshore.
