I was a bit too young and never seemed to get involved in that. One of my mates, on the other hand, was a Mod and tells me lots of stories..

The regulations change all the time, there's nothing wrong with keeping up to date as previously mentioned. Remember that competency is based on the combination of academics and experience with many companies ideally looking for "experienced electricians" rather than "academic electricians".
