Hi all

I have been using a new sub contractor to help with some extra work for the last few weeks. Now we only work local with in a ten mile radius. Now the thing is I question his hours this week as they seemed high and he said that he clocks in from when he leaves his house to when he gets home and that he was struck in traffic a couple of times this week on the way home. I agreed a hourly rate with this guy with no mention of traveling time as its only local. Now non of the over lads get payed traveling but before I get into it with him I thought I would see what you guys think.

Cheers

he's taking the pi$$. no employer would pay his time for travelling. pay him his hours on site, or a price for the job.

only expect travel time when over 10-20 miles in my book
(worked for 1 company and they did not want to pay for 20 hours travel, so quit)

Did he get a lot of work done and help you out? was the work he did a lot for the price you paid him?

That's my thoughts aswell. Does anyone have a good way of tracking a subbies times normally there on site with one of my over lads but at moment there on there own.

Can't expect someone travelling around the country not to charge for their time and expences. Local is a different proposition. As above, 10-15 miles is a no pay job for me.

Tag 'em ?

Like MJD said , is he still earning you the money or sometimes more importantly the appreciation of the customers for the job he has done ?
If not , i suggest it is time you rubbed that registered charity number off your forehead and employed someone that appreciates a job in the current climate .:83:

The jobs are for existing customers that get charged by the hour plus parts.

well it can be a mistake to add sub contractors to jobs where day rates apply if they are unsupervised, that said, I have some cracking lads working for me who are trustworthy and good at the Job, please please do not take this the wrong way, but perhaps you need to supervise them a little more if your unsure you can trust them, Anyhow I would never put a new subby on a Job alone if I didn't know him, most are good guys, but when they get paid by the clock and work is tight they may, I say may, hang about a bit.

Yeah. Good basic common sense.

Do you have any sort of written contract with this subcontractor?

I do trust him to a point. Broke one of my rules on this one which will properly end up biting me in the --- and end in me being the bad guy. he is my uncle who got made redundant a couple of months ago can't find a job so has gone self employed but is struggling to find work. So I after getting a call from him I agreed to giving him a couple of weeks work.

When i work as a subby its a day rate based on 8 to 4.30 onsite with 1/2 hr lunch local and if further than 30 miles goes up to take in fuel and extra travelling etc but always onsite same hrs seems to work for me and those clients who pay day works

If they say no to the rate then no subby by for them simples

Have you discussed this him?

Are you charging the customer travel time?

Both of these questions need answering before you start asking on here here as if either answer is yes then he has every right to invoice you for it.

No never charge travel time for local work as you would never get a job.

not spoke to him yet as want a few opinions on it.

Lets be practical who in the right mind would pay someone for normal in hours booked in work to travel to an from there home no employer has ever payed me in the past nor would I of asked.

I just thought I would see what your thoughts was to try to be fair to him

I think you should sit him down and tell him how you operate with working hours and any travel time etc and get an agreement signed so that you are both on the same page.

I hated sub-contracting as there was always drama when ever you hold your hand out for money.

Give me books in any day.

Once a pee taker always a pee taker, if he stops shafting you this way he will find another way.

Sack him.....................................!
