Hi guys,
Just wondering if I could pick some brains of the guys that are over in Spain. I am in the UK at the moment and thinking about looking at moving over to Spain and work as an electrician, I am UK qualified, have my own place and speak Spanish. Looking to work for a company and just wondering what was the state of work over there at the moment? obviously methods for wiring are different and wondering if easy to pick up and if I need to transfer qualifications or take any bridging courses? Any advice would be gratefully recieved as would any other words of wisdom regarding anything relevant.
Thanks in advance.

Spanish electrics are varied, but more recently quite good. You will always find restaurants with multiple outside lights fed from bell wire and chocblocks, but their DBs are much better these days. Expect radials only, singles in conduit, and screw-nuts in the JBs. However, my personal experience has been good in the main. The going rate is about €17/hour, so not exactly millionnaire territory.
You will pick it up in no time, but may have to get to grips with local variations...
Well respected profession though, in my experience.
You will also see some horrors!

a friend of ours is currently working as a builder in Greece and gets paid into his English bank

However after 6 months I believe he now has to have a Greek bank and pay Greek taxes

Well...you'll have less insulation,to worry about...early finishes....and urgent,has no meaning...;)

...But their electrical forums are devoid of humour

Hi guys, thanks for the info. Surprised at the hourly rate stated by pirate, thought it would be less than that. Working out on the exchange rate at the moment it's not far off earnings here. Looks like I won't be a millionaire here or Spain, but at least be in the sun, (most of the time)lol. I take it that the hour rate is for city areas? Does seem something that can be picked up easily, having done bits around the house there. Just thinking about the technical side of things like relevant qualifications and equivalents. As for jobs not being urgent, I do remember being told by a neighbour that in Spain you are only classed as late if you are more than an hour after agreed time of arrival, anything before isn't classed as being late.
Anyway thanks again for info, anything else you guys think is relevant will be gratefully recieved.
Cheers

APE37, that rate was for rural Menorca...so not reflective of city rates, of which I know little. The labourer who assisted the electrician charged the same rate, but I was very impressed with his work too.
I have never had to wait more than 3 hours from reporting a problem til someone arrived. I expect that wouldn't be the same in, say, madrid or barcelona.
Still, nice to work in the sun!
