Thank you @Megawatt . I received more clarity around what I have. I called a local electrical inspector and walked him through it. Apparently it's a common practice — multi-circuit branch system with a shared neutral. Basically it's 2 circuits, on a double breaker, sharing a neutral. And it's...
Here is a diagram showing what was previously going on:
The source power 12/3 came into the kitchen pendant
An additional 12/3 cable connected the kitchen and dining pendants (red to red; black to black; white to white...all at the kitchen pendant)
The switch leg for the kitchen lights tied...
They're actually on 2 different breakers, which are ganged together at the panel. I believe it's considered a multiwire branch circuit (not as common, for good reason).
Does that change any of the above info?
I've got 4 different sets of fixtures between our dining room and kitchen: 1 set of can lights + 1 set of pendants in EACH room. I'd like each fixture group to have it's own dimmer switch, all in the same switch box.
The source power comes in directly between the rooms with 12/3 nm cable (the...
Thank you @Megawatt ! The junction box has plenty of space — it is either a 12x12 or 14x14. The limiting factor is the conduit leading from the box to the panel. That's why I wasn't sure if I could just stop my ground wire at the junction box and pigtail into one of the other grounds that's...
I'm running a few new circuits inside my home...working my way backwards (wiring from inside the house, back towards the outdoor panel). I have a large outdoor junction box, approximately 18' away from the panel, serving as an entry point / splice box as it leads cables into the home.
Again...
Hey all!
I'm trying to find the best way to wire a dual switch for a porch light and indoor ceiling fan. The source power cable, fan power cable, porch light power cable, as well as a smoke detector power cable all reside within an accessible metal j-box (see attached drawing).
I currently...
If you're using MC Cable for wiring main runs from an outdoor panel, do you just strip back the necessary amount of metal jacket to go from the panel to inside? Or use THHN from the panel to a junction box inside the house, then start using MC?
Hello! I need to install 2 new outlets in my living room — an 1887 brick home that we are gradually remodeling. I don't want to do any surface mounted boxes b/c of the historic aesthetic. So I see my options as:
Floor outlets recessed into the hardwood floors, or
Wall outlets recessed/chiseled...
