Yeah - book price £43 a 100m reel of 2.5mm, about £28.50 for 1mm.

You can get cheaper if you go in bulk, but hard if you only need a reel or two at a time.

It's the cost of copper, apparently.....

Are we heading back to aluminium cable I wonder.....or some other junk?

I don't think aluminium is that cheap now compared to the seventies when we were still using wooden ladders

You mean there's something wrong with my wooden ladders now? Lol!

Seriously - that reminds me of that damned injury advert. "They gave me the wrong ladder" - yeah to fit an internal fire alarm sounder OUTSIDE you twonk. You deserved to fall off that ladder, you brainless moron, if you didn't know any better than to check the ladder was safe for use, or if you didn't have a clue what you were fitting. Grrrrrrrr.

Oh, and no, aluminium isn't that cheap either any longer.

Won't be long til we get composite cables of some type though - synthetic conductors of some type.

It sure does - and in turn everyone I've ever known I think - I just can't keep my mouth shut about it whenever I see it.

I actually complained about it.

Seriously - it painted every electrical related trade as some kind of idiot, and to be honest, I'm not a great fan of this litigation culture either. I think most of these "we'll find a way to claim whenever you happen to be incompetent enough to hurt yourself" are seriously damaging to the economy in the long run, and to the goodwill of business and enterprise.

That said, I do think health and safety matters too, but there's a point we all have to accept responsibility - and those leaches just seem to want to tell people it's ok to be an idiot, not to think for themselves, and let their employer pick up the tab for that stupidity.

It's always been a problem pricing long term jobs as there is not only the cable price to factor in if copper keeps on going up then accessories will have to follow. As with all pricing you just have to give it your best shot or tie it down to the BEAMA index Statistics ... BEAMA | The British Electrotechnical & Allied Manufacturers Association this type of contract give you an uplift on your price today in line with price and labour cost increases in the coming months

does wet string come by 100 mt or 200 mt rolls, can I fit a imanignary rcd as well

Well string can be a trip hazard so I don't know how an RCD would fit in:rolleyes::):)

Unfotunately common sense doesn't seem to be in abundance these days

For this reason, among others, we always stipulate a validity period for quotes, and point out that if acceptance occurs after that point, we reserve the right to amend pricing.

Where we know we're going to need materials on a call off basis, we will generally negotiate pricing with a supplier, and use them for that entire project - they know they're getting future business, and we know we're getting fixed pricing, usually valid for the duration of the project.

It really depends on how wet you need the string. A 200m roll of very wet would weigh a lot.

And you can just imagine DIYers having issue with the wetness value of any string. (That's going somewhere TOTALLY different in my head just now).

With long term quotes for large amounts of cable, we quote at todays prices an include a clause that the cable price will shift according to the copper commodities index at the time of purchase. We quote the commodity price at the time of quoting and make it clear that the cable price could be more or possibly less than the figure given. This removes the risk but it's not always good practice on a large mixed quote where it might be better to quote fixed prices and 'hedge' the fact that copper will probably go up in price whilst technology such as PLC's will likely come down.

It's all a game....
