I need a little advice on how to run some conduit from Romex behind drywall around my garage wall to connect to a L14-30 receptacle. A generator will connect to this outlet to power my main panel using an interlock kit. The conduit only will be used in my garage and I feel is necessary so I don’t drill a bunch of holes through vertical 2x4 load bearing framing. Finally - I know running Romex through conduit isn’t typically done, so I will use a junction box to connect to a wire that works well inside conduit. I have a couple questions.
1: What are your thoughts using PVC conduit While metal is typically used, generators have a bonded ground to neutral that doesn’t play well with your main panel neutral/ground connection. Having metal conduit that is also grounded and exposed between the main panel and generator could create a potentially dangerous conductor of electricity across my entire garage wall! Even if it isn’t the “normal thing to do”, having a plastic conduit adds a level of safety I think is appropriate for this situation. What do you guys think? What would you do?
2: What is the best junction box to use that would allow me to connect my Romex behind the wall to PVC conduit outside the wall. Can an “all plastic” solution be worked out so that I can avoid the problem described in the first question.
Of course, I could be overthinking this whole thing which does happen from time to time! ?
Some additional helpful information: The wire needs to support a 240v 30 amp load. I have the right 10/3 Romex selected. I was thinking of running some other wire through 1/2 inch conduit where I can get plastic locknuts for the PVC conduit.
