Todays job was to install an outside light.
Light installed, switch installed... time to connect to existing PL and N in garage light. Quick Zs, shouldn't be any problems as it's a fairly new build. No Zs!
I know, I know, I should have done this before hand. I've worked on this property before, it's well wired and it was a new build, I foolishly assumed it would be earthed properly.
Pinched an earth from a nearby socket and 1 hour later my new work has an earth ?. No extra charge as I should have done this as a pre-work check. I explain to the customer how good I am about making their garage lights safe.
Go to wire it into the batten holder in the garage, unscrew the earth terminal and I test the Zs again as I suddenly think just how unlikely it was that there was a broken cpc in this property...... I get a Zs reading!!!!
I then notice that the earth sleeving was a little too long and this had covered the copper when it was screwed into the earth terminal, hence no reading when I touched the earth terminal with my tester.
I remove my redundant new earth, connect up new light, stay quiet, collect money and scarper! ?
