That is exactly what it is, flick a switch and see if some lights come on.
 
Aparantly, only trained monkeys can do it.
The message I was getting was that emergency lighting is too complicated for me and I should leave well alone - much safer not to bother, and if the client/boss decides they want emergency lighting then it's up to them to contract it out to someone who's done a special course.
