So I have just been to my friends new build house, on looking round I noticed a bank of 4 switches in the lounge, only one of which turned the ceiling lights on? When I inquired to what the other three did, he replied the electrician had wired them to 3 x 13A sockets around the room for them to plug lamps into, so they could be turned on/off when entering the room! Whilst I can't find any regulation saying you can't have 13A sockects on a lighting circuit, It's not something I would do. At least he could have fitted 5A outlets. The circuit is wired in 1.5mm T&E & protected by 6A MCB, so if something was plugged into the socket rated higher than 6A I guess it would just trip the breaker & the cable would be protected, I'm just not sure this is good practice? Also the distribution board is mounted just below ceiling hight in a small cupboard!! Not very accessable!! Any thoughts or regs would be appriciated.
Thanks

Trouble with using 5A sockets is you then have to mess around changing plugs on lamps
I cant see what the issue is as chances are the socket's will have lamps plugged In so will won't be available for general use, un switched sockets may be a good idea though.

Are the switches grid type? they could be 3 controlling the sockets 20amp and 1 6amp doing the lighting

At least with 5A sockets they will not be able to plug anything else in and trip the circuit, I dont think there going to have 3 lamps in the 1 room! why un-switched sockets?

I can see a problem, someone could plug in a 13 amp appliance. Why would unswitched sockets be a good idea?
I think they're a bad idea if they're in an accessible place.

My sister and ger husband bought a house a few years back and every socket was unswitched. About a week after they moved in those ones were out and switched ones were in place.
