Hi all.

Im will be having a home office completed in January and need advice on what to buy.

First let me say that I hate electricity, so there is absolutely no way i will be touching this myself. I have been ripped off in the past by builders so I want to be in control of materials that are being purchased for the project..

I am looking to have the interior light, the exterior light and bluetooth ceiling speakers and want them all to be able to be switched on and off at the same point . What type of switch do i need to control all three with the same power source.

Hope this makes sense.

Not sure if you are from the UK or US but tie the 3 wires together for the interior light, exterior light and speakers together and use a snap switch to turn them all on

You say you mistrust builders and the like and want to be in control of purchasing materials, get the electrician to advise and locate a s supplier, and ask if you can go with him to see what you are buying and pay for it yourself, might not endear you to your Electrician though..

I dont think there is anything wrong with me going out and buying the light switches and plug sockets myself. I also havnt decided what finish i want yet.

Presumably you’re looking at three individual switches at the same point? What are the power requirements / manufacturers instructions for the speaker installation? Possibly look at 3G grid type modules with a DP switch to knock out the speakers ...if they are suitable for a lighting circuit. As above though, as your spark should be able to advise on a decent quality switch.

Please discuss this with the electrician, buying your own materials is fine but some manufacturers may require deeper boxes to mount them in, so if the spark has fitted 25mm as standard and your kit requires 35mm who pays for the additional work and mess?

A little bit of communication goes a long way. Even saying "I've bought these eBay specials that require 45mm backboxes" at the start of the first fix saves a lot of hassle.

And please don't let a builder anywhere near wiring, they just see it as a hinderance and tend to leave it as an afterthought. If you post your location a forum member might be able to advise further or recommend and trusted tradesperson near you.
