the flat we are just about to refubish is for rental and currently the cooker and 9.5 Kw shower (spurred from cooker point) run on a single 6 mm cable. This I am changing for to two single runs 10mm sq for the shower and 6mm for the cooker pointAlso all cable in the flat is white twin and earth (yet to be tested), have suggested changing all cable (to newer grey) whilst the house is pulled apart but the client of course would prefer keeping works to a minimum. I know for rental all circuits should be rcd protected, so once changed was going to look into putting all on to a single 80 amp rcd (though yet to locate service head to check rating), but am aware these days a split load 17th edition board should be used.
What is the best way to do any of this, and is there anything i am missing 20130910_153348.jpg?

I don't think it's a good idea to stick a rcd as main switch unless its a tt system I would either go 17th dual rcd if on a budget but would rather use rcbo's for each circuit

Ok just check and there appears not to be enough space to fit standard rcbos as this is one of the old council type metal cupboards with only 4 cm clearance above the existing mcbs :(

install your shower cable on the RCD side of the board. leave the cooker feed as it is but dis. the shower from it. you don't have to upgrade the CU , as it's only the work that you do that has to comply to 17th. obviously, you need to ensure that earthing and bonding is present and adequate.

Understood and thank you, but also trying to bring the whole system up to standard as the flat will be rented, does this not matter as long as it all passes all the tests.

if your tests on the existing circuits are good, then it's fine to leave it alone. would you scrap your car if it was a 2000 model with no ABS or airbags?

test first...
if good for continued service...then you have no business condmning it...

If it ain't broke, don't fix it

Am i missing something here, why the hell would you want to change white sheathed T&E for grey sheathed cable FFS?? And what's that got to do with bringing this installation up to 17th standard??

Oh and BTW you can purchase the dual RCD skeleton frames to fit those council metal cupboard CU's from any good wholesaler.

In my in laws they have white T + E (none LSF) all tested out fine when I changed there board last year. You shouldn't condem something just because you think it's old.

As everyone has said if it tests ok leave it. you are more likely to get more jobs/recommendations from the client it you are saving them money, rather than trying to convince them to spend it.

I'd be well peed off if someone charged me for ripping out perfectly good t&e to replace it with some more perfectly good t&e. Daz

and if it's imperial stranded T/E, you'd be replacing it with something much inferior. like trading an aston martin for a morris marina.

My understanding was that white t&e has been out for some time and would/could be coming to the end of it recommended life (installation date unsure). It is a small systems and the client is a friend as well, so am just seeing what the best options are for them. Most of the cabling is in trunking and would only take about 3 days with two of us to change over. I just did not want to put there house back together to find it was best to change over.

If it had no airbags I would :) Love to have my nose hurting and be covered in powder after a crash.

Maybe it is coming to the end of its recommended life? I don't know, when I tested my in laws (see my earlier post) all IR results were >500M ohms and got very good live and dead tests throughout!
