Hi Everyone,

Here it is, got a leaflet through the door saying replacement Boiler with £400 off, sounds good?

Got them out to take a look, the guy spends about 5 seconds at the boiler then goes on about "them asians" wanting something for nothing and wasting his time and then gives us a quote for £2600 to replace a boiler, like for like!

It's a combi boiler for a small 2 bed flat with 6 radiators, surely that can't be right??

I think the part that got me was he said it would be 2 guys starting at 8.30 and finished for 2.30, fair enough. But, the labour cost is £1700!

Think he's just wasted my time! ;-)

I replaced my boiler with a Bosch 37cdi a couple of years ago off the top off my head it was about 900 quid including the flue kit.i it's black magic this plumbing lark.

What boiler are they putting in. Are they upgrading controls and gas pipe work and is price inc vat

Sorry forgot that was for the boiler only!1700 for two nut turners for aday is abit steep I think

Yes .. that's the boiler I fitted at both my mates and my own house.

It's a b'start to fit, but should cost no more than about £1,200 complete. One of the best & easiest in my view is the Baxi Duotech.

Yeah VAT was included, was a Worcester Bosch 25si? Something like that. It also had 1m flue extension, a Wireless thermostat, thought the parts were priced towards the top end of what I'd expect but £1700 for a plumber and labourer for a day, wish I could charge those prices! lol No other work priced for, out and in job he said...

When changing a boiler, we are supposed to thoroughly flush the system and make sure that Thermostatic Radiator Valves and a roomstat are fitted - either wired or wireless.

We also have to ensure that the gas pipe is the correct size. If the boiler is replacing a System Boiler i.e. one with water tanks, then it's likely that the gas pipe will be only 15mm and if we're replacing that with a Combi Boiler, the pipework will need to be 22mm or in some cases even 28mm.

That said, in our OP's case I would suggest that the price should be no more than £1,200 / £1,400.

Remember that a 37kW boiler will fill a bath a bit quicker than a 24kW boiler, while either will be quite happy to power 6 radiators !!!

Geordie Spark, it's a combi for combi swap, he said that it would only take them half an hour at the end to flush the system and get it set up and running. Got a local company coming out at the weekend, not even going to mention how much I've been quoted so far!!

OK ..... but be advised that to flush the system "properly" is not a five minute job. It can take three or four flushes - one of which involves the use of a chemical flushing agent.

It's the same as electrical work - there's a "job" and there's a "proper job" and you get what you pay for.

I used to spend a whole day doing a like-for-like swap, but a fair bit of that time was in the flushing before the swap & the commissioning & setting-up (balancing etc) at the end.

I'm not saying that the first price you were given is right - it isn't - it's a rip-off.

I hope I have helped. :)

Made it a lot clearer for when the next guy quotes!

The company in question was SSE, tbh I was expecting it to cost more than most places but was thinking still under £2k, that price for installation was what really got me...

New boiler I would have guessed you could get for £1000 the labour 1 day for 1plumber £160 I would have thought £1500 would have been more than enough but I do plumbing and electrical so easy for me buying have to say I am not keen on the plumbing

Yeah, my brother got his replaced a couple of years ago and had the fancy wireless stat, which I'm not too fussed about, for around £1500. But he's in Edinburgh and I'm in Glasgow so his guy would probably end up the same as SSE with travel costs!
I thought it would be about the same, maybe a slightly bigger boiler than he needed but with all the wiring in place and a wired stat it couldn't be that much more. Maybe the guy pricing over the weekend will be more realistic!

SSE , BGAS, NPOWER..!! big companies = big overheads.........!

ring a local gas fitter..

i got my 35kw fittted for 2.4k ............ that included removal of ALL redundant tanks and bits, full system flush, conversion from gravity fed to pressurised, new flue, brickwork, and new bits of commper pipe installed for fed / return and future flushing etc...

I bought a ferrolli boiler for my two bed flat For £700 my plumber fitted for £150 so yes that sounds steep!
