Recently, whenever we plug in either our kettle (1850-2200 Watts) or our iron (2300-2750 Watts), it trips the RCD for that circuit. Nothing has been changed on the installation, and we've had both appliances for a few years and they never used to cause this problem. Up until recently, whenever the RCD did trip, I simply re-set it and then we were able to use whichever appliance it was. However, this morning there was a loud pop when the missus plugged in the kettle, and now the kettle won't work at all, despite me changing the fuse in the plug. Also, the socket which she plugged it into won't work either: the switch is stuck in the open position. Any ideas welcomed.

you need a new kettle and a new socket.

what he said. ^^^^. it would appear that the kettle has been faulty for a while, getting progressively worse, till finally shorting out.

The RCD tripping was indicative of the appliances started to fail, although it could also be indicative of the socket starting to fail but this less likely to occur in this manner.

The bang and the total failure of the kettle caused a high fault current to flow and this spark welded the contacts together (or melted the plastic of the switch) so that the switch will not operate.

As said above the kettle is now broken and the socket is damaged and both need replacing.

Another good word to add to my repertoire,Rich "Indicative" nice one must try and fit that one in somewhere.

Thanks to all for the feedback, but one thing that's puzzling is that the kettle is only about a month old and carries the CE mark. Is it common for such an appliance to fail so soon?

you should be indited.

if your kettle is only a month old it will still be guaranteed so take it back to where you got it but how about the iron is it still making your RCD trip or was it just your socket ?
