Should we stop buying gear from China and give it to another country. Considering the corona virus.

There are other reasons to boycott China, but coronavirus isn't one of them

Coronavirus is definitely one of many in my opinion.

Will be very difficult to do in practice though.

It's coming, just think about it China is now dominant now and trying to rule the world.
in one way or another . Any way think of those in Hong Kong. Most stuff originally were made in tiwain many moons ago.
The country's should be looking west.

20 years ago was when to start doing that, that horse has bolted now, in many areas you have no choice but to buy from China.

The answer now, and what Trump is attempting, is to level the playing field with tariffs and sanctions.

If they have to manufacture to our standards, environment constraints, legal framework, employment rights etc.. then their costs will rise to near parity.

If they don't then the tariff should reflect the competitive advantage.

Would always prefer to buy British manufactured if the quality and price is right. .... and yes, I’m a remoaner! As above, virus situation not a reason to boycott, as current situation with virus subject to a lot of ‘what if’s’ which again get very political. I find the West’s trading relationship with China strange when you consider the amount invested in basing manufacturing out there.

No, it is very simple: companies want cheaper costs for bigger profits and people want to pay less.

The fact both groups get screwed over long-term seems to escape them...

and what about indea and other country's around that area.
What about them?

If they had the same intention to engage in asymetrical global trade warfare then the same should apply.

A lot of companies relocated call centre and IT support to india with mixed results. Some manufacturing has also gone their, again with mixed results.

The big difference is the control, in India you are dealing with an ex colonial entity with a mainly robust western legal framework and internal competition.

This is not the case in China.

The world is relying on China for most things
And we the world knows this.
Now country's are asking about the corona virus, like Australia not China has put in big tariffs. Then other country's should do the same to them. Like it or not. We have made are bed.but don't try to pull the sheets over our heads.

I have worked with some very smart and capable Indians, but many companies that move operations there do so purely to save money and so they go for the lowest cost on offer.

Pay peanuts, get monkeys. Same everywhere in the world (UK included).

But your point is valid, India is a democracy and operates to essentially the same rules as us.

Yes, India has some serious issues of rising nationalism and divides on religious lines but we are not perfect examples either. Just look to 'the troubles' in NI with over 3500 killed, and the behaviour over Brexit (including murder of Jo Cox), and to a lesser degree the way the Scottish Independence vote split families.

I find the situation with India quite ironic especially with the cast system. I actually find them more British than the British now i.e. more like the colonial brits of 150 years ago.

Their railways run on time and we put them their with heat buckled rail lines and they still run, leaves on the lines not there boulders land slip and the odd derailment.
Good old britsh engeering. What what.

There’s been no boycott of Chinese products after years and years of iffy human rights. It’s not going to happen because of the pandemic either.

my father in law had a holiday there once.... the Chinese very friendly towards westerners, but when he asked their guide about the tiamanan square uprising, was told not to ask, “it didn’t happen”

Is it where a one man hulk tried to stop a tank. Lol . Power to the peaple.

A lot of manufacturing that moved to China years ago is coming back, extended supply chain and poor quality control are the main reasons.

Until consumers stop buying cheap tat from China the rot will continue, western manufacturers can compete due to regulatory and moral restrictions whereas China don't care about their workforce.

I find it amusing that the same media that tells us that we should not blame Islam when some nutter mows people down in the street happily associated that nutter and Jo Cox's murder with Brexit, it's almost as if our media had their own agenda.
