well i guess `money`s too tight to mention` for some...
surveyed a job this afternoon.....well an `electrician`...lol....an electrician had been there already to feed a garage
(origin of supply is TN-S).....he`s gone and used a 2.5mm CSA
(why not a 4.0mm CSA i thought) ...but he`s bought a length thats now too short.. as he`s altered the run its taking without any due thought....lol...
told the customer i could joint it on a through box (surface mounted near the house C/U) onto a bit more armoured to get the length to go to the bottom of the C/U (metalclad)....or re-feed with a new armoured ......
then i got into the garage itself...to see what he`d done in there.....luckily enough theres enough length on the armoured feed in there to avoid joints....but theres bits of 1.5 flat to feed sockets (4 ov) in old colours.....1.0 flat for his lighting ..again old colours....and general untidiness of his work.....so i asked the chap if this guy had said anything to him about certification......response was the all to common....`he never mentioned anything about that`....hmm....
i gave him 2 prices...one to use the existing armoured.....the other to re-feed....either way the garage `install` that this joey has done will need re-doing (new colours & correct CSA)
so he`s gone with the cheaper option (well, theres a surprise..lol).....
start thursday mornin....sort it out....terminate, test and issue ticket....

Good for you, the customer came short with the cheapest quote mentality but I doubt most of them ever learn.

well i have said i will sort all the crap out....which will entail re-feeding the sockets in there with a 2.5mm CSA......i have also said i will do away with the old colour 1.0 that he`s also used....so in effect it will be a new install....the armoured he pulled in will stay....i will extend with a metal throughbox....to get it to the house C/U....i dont like jointing cables just off the cuf but the customer wont go to the cost of new.....

Is there anything actually wrong with the cable?
well...its been installed badly which i know is not necessarily a case to condemn it at all Tony....but its old cable that he has obviously dragged of ov another job (ripout maybe?) and looks old and is starting to harden in places......i will IR test the 1.0mm cable...and we`ll see....but the 1.5 is wrong anyway for the sockets.....so i`m replacing that with some 2.5....which will obviously be in new colours....

What's the protection on the 1.5mm²?

well this is it....the guy was proposing to use 20A for the points....6A for his lights....judging by the garage board he left

Well, 1.5mm² is good for 20A if clipped direct and no other factors. I would have used 2.5mm² but it does comply (just).

Glenn has'nt been to clear, the other "sparky" installed the radial skt circuit and lights in red and black using recycled cable! Class :). This is what we are up against now? rip out some 20+ year old cable from a rewire job and use it on a garage install, brilliant. Rip it all out and start again.
